Sometimes, books just touch you and humble you and remind you of what’s really important in life.

Owen and Mzee, two animals that under normal circumstances would likely have never become friends but yet, they did. Owen, a baby hippo without parents, and Mzee, a 130 year old giant tortoise come together in a time of struggle and strife. I mean, honestly, would you ever think the two would have become pals?

Children’s book review: Owen and Mzee – The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship

I won’t go into full details about the storyline of this book because I’ve already given you a quick summary of it. Needless to say, it’s a touching read but it’s not an easy read. Children will learn of challenges animals go through during times of natural disasters and the efforts of their rescuers. This book will prompt questions and queries and maybe even a few tears but it is obvious that there is a happy reassuring ending because Owen and Mzee find each other. - owen and mzee book

My daughter and I only recently discovered this book. Published back in 2006, I was probably in no shape or mindset to look for new books since my daughter was just a wee itty bitty thing at that time. Nine years later, I’m glad we discovered Owen and Mzee because they’ve nurtured us and have reminded us that life isn’t supposed to be perfect, that it can have hiccups and that you can rise above those hiccups. - owen and mzee book

While this book, Owen and Mzee, may be about two animals, we can learn so much from their experiences. All of us will face challenges in life, whether big or small, and we’ll have to decide how we choose to deal with them. Do we choose to lie down and let life’s hiccups bulldoze us to the ground or will we pick ourselves up, dust off, patch up the scrapes and bruises and do our best to move forward? - owen and mzee book

Sometimes, we can do it independently but sometimes we need a helping hand. Maybe that helping hand won’t be from a 130 year old giant tortoise but it might be a family member, a friend, or a book about a baby hippo and that same 130 year old giant tortoise. Maybe that book will remind me that you’re not the only one who’s come across tough times and that there can be a light at the end of that tunnel. Maybe that book will remind me of good that’s still left in this world. - owen and mzee book

Yes, that’s why this book is so powerful.

If you’re looking for a meaningful book to add to your repertoire, Owen and Mzee – The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship, may just be in your near future. While the book may have been published back in 2006, it is an equally good read in 2015. - owen and mzee book

Owen and Mzee manage to elicit tears and bring joy. It’s also a powerful reminder that friends can be friends and it has nothing to do with appearance (hint hint: we people could learn a lot from this one simple fact alone!). More importantly, I tip my hat off to the many rescuers who helped along the way. At a time when the world seems to move too quickly and too independently, it’s inspiring to see how people can work together for a common selfless goal.
