A little while ago, I reviewed the PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars which I thought were a little on the gross side (my own personal feeling of course. Others may find them absolutely delectable). Then, boom! Browsing through the frozen aisle at my local Loblaws recently my eyes came across this box – PC Loads of Mango fruit bars. Now, I don’t recall seeing them before but I’m determined to give them a try because I’m sure they’re going to taste better than those PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars. Well…at least that’s what I’m hoping. Summer may be fading but the weather is still warm so I think it’s perfectly justified to test out these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars.

*fingers crossed they don’t disappoint*

Product Review: What ingredients are in the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars?

Here are the ingredients that went into the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars: mango, sugar, water, glucose solids, citric acid, guar gum, dextrose, mono- and diglycerides, carob bean gum, polysorbate 80.

My thoughts on this list of ingredients?

Well, I love the fact that the first ingredient is mango. After all, these are called PC Loads of Mango fruit bars. It would seem a little awful if mangoes were buried somewhere midway in the list of ingredients. Sure, I see that sugar is the second ingredient but at least it is sugar and not corn syrup or something gross, mind you I can see that glucose solids and dextrose show up shortly thereafter on that ingredient list. Aren’t mangoes already sweet? Why do these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars need that much sweet stuff? AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

Then there’s all that other stuff that went into these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars. So, the good news is there’s a lot of mango in these bars but aside from that, they are definitely a luxury item and perhaps not something to eat on a daily basis.

Product Review: How does the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars taste?

For this taste test, the hubby and I each decided to try out the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars. Here is what they look like – not bad, right? Well, they taste even better! Despite all the sugar, these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars don’t taste as sweet as I thought they would which is weird because they actually have more sugar than the PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars.

The PC Loads of Mango fruit bars have a whopping 24 grams of sugar per bar while the PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars had 16 grams of sugar. Yet, oddly enough, I feel like the PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars tasted sweeter than these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars. I can’t quite figure out why but I think it has to do with the textures of the two fruit bars.

The PC Loads of Mango fruit bars has these really cool mango chunks that give it an extra punch of texture and flavour. Compared to the swish and mush of the PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars, they have a much better balance of flavours which is why I don’t notice the crazy amount of sugar. The PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars seem noticeably sweeter because it’s just one ball of smoosh. There is absolutely nothing in there to offset that sweetness which is why it seems sweeter than the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars despite its slightly lower amounts of sugar.

Despite the 24 grams of sugar, I have to be honest and tell you all that the PC Loads of Mango fruit bars were really tasty. I loved the texture and the taste. The PC Loads of Mango fruit bars taste like freshly cut frozen mangoes and I couldn’t be happier. While the hubby liked the PC Loads of Mango fruit bar, he wasn’t particularly wowed by it. I on the other hand, couldn’t be happier!

Verdict:

The PC Blue Menu mango peach smoothie bars may have been a disappointment but these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars make my happy. Each bar is 50% fruit and has ¼ of a mango. That’s pretty amazing. I know, I know, they have an enormous amount of sugar in them and I’m struggling with that. I wish I could eat them every day but that would NOT be a good idea.

Hm…could there be something just as tasty but with much less sugar?

Let the search continue! (however, in a pinch, these PC Loads of Mango fruit bars really are delicious!)
