My child, Jenny, is now 9 years old. She’s always been an avid reader and our home is full of books. Once upon a time, she used to love Barney and Dora and Thomas the Tank Engine. She loved Clifford, Little Critter, and Pinkalicious. She loved Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew and she loved Geronimo Stilton. In recent years, her taste in books has certainly diversified. Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and quiz books have become favourites.
Of course, let’s not forget gross books like this Discovery Kids 1000 Awesomely Gross and Disgusting Facts Book.
Oh yeah…this one was a home run from the minute she saw the front cover.
Children’s Book Review: what’s so great about the 1000 Discovery Kids Awesomely Gross and Disgusting Facts Book?
First off, this book is by Discovery Kids so that already is a step in the right direction. The fact that it also happens to contain 1000 awesomely gross disgusting facts was the icing on the cake.
The big kid couldn’t wait to get her hands on this book and eagerly dove into it to collect as many gross facts as she could. Of course, with each new disgusting fact came the ‘did you knowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’ followed by hilarious laughter or a ton of ‘ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’. You can tell by the Table of Contents that this isn’t a book for those with a weak stomach.
Now, not all gross facts are disgusting. Sometimes, they’re just really good pieces of information to know. For instance, I never knew that my snot looks more yellow when I have a cold because it has more white blood cells in it. Did you?
I also learned about the golden poison frog, yet another creature I should stay very far away from.
The illustrations and pictures are perfect for this book. There’s just enough detail and chaos to keep school aged children intrigued and occupied while they learned about odd facts. Check out this one about hardtack(s) (can I even add an ‘s’ to make it plural? I have no clue). I didn’t even know such a thing existed until I read it in the book:
When my daughter first got this book, I think she read it every single day until she practically memorized all the details.
If you have a school ager in your home or know of one that loves to read, you may just want to give this book a try. The Discovery Kids 1000 Awesomely Gross and Disgusting Facts Book is jammed full of illustrations, photos, and facts about things big and small that you may not find anywhere else. They all have one thing in common: they’re just completely gross!
