Crackers are a basic part of my carb life. I mean, crackers go well with cheese, jam, spreads, and nut butters. They make for a quick snack and while most are empty, crackers can certainly be paired with other foods to make the snack more substantial.
Crackers make other foods shine.
Yes, that’s it.
Having said that, not all crackers are created equal. This I can say because I read ingredient labels and I know some brands have some pretty scary ingredients in them. I decided to try out the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers because they were recently on sale at my local health food store. I had cheese at home just waiting for the perfect partner. Any guesses on how the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers fared?
Product Review: What ingredients are in the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers?
Here are the ingredients that went into making the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers: organic wheat flour, organic palm oil, organic expeller pressed sunflower oil and/or organic expeller pressed safflower oil, sea salt, organic evaporated cane sugar, leavening (baking soda, cream of tartar), organic yeast.
Wait, press pause.
Did I just read that correctly? Did I just read the word ‘oil’ appear not once but twice on that ingredient list (I didn’t count the third ‘oil’ given the whole and/or thing but I’m tempted to)? What’s up with that? Does a cracker really need all that oil? I appreciate that organic wheat flour is the first ingredient but I’m stumped on all that oil.
Right off the bat, the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers, without even tasting them, have been thrown into the ‘eat in moderation’ category which most crackers tend to lie given so many of them have an ‘oil’ of some sort as their second or third ingredient.
Sigh, this is not looking good.
Product Review: how do the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers taste?
That’s how the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers taste. I know that sounds silly given that they are saltine crackers but I didn’t expect them to taste THAT salty. When you look at the nutrition label, you’ll see that each 14 g serving gives you 5% of your daily intake of sodium which doesn’t sound like much until you take a closer look. In this case, 14 g is only about 4 crackers which means each cracker is holding at least 1% of your daily intake of sodium.
My big kid and I both love to eat crackers but the first thing she said when she tried the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers was, “WOAH, that’s salty. I like them, but they’re salty.” What did she end up doing? She took a spoon and started to scrape off the salt from the top of the cracker. It’s a little hard to see from these images but there is a slight salty coating on the tops of each cracker.
The Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers are crispy and crunchy and yes, they do taste pretty good but they’re much too salty for our liking. Pairing cheese with these Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers just wouldn’t work because that would only make them saltier.
I had high hopes for these Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers. I saw the word ‘organic’, I saw the sale, I crossed my fingers and didn’t really think twice when I took it to the cash register. My bad. I should have read the package more thoroughly. I mean, on the one hand, the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers sound promising. They’re certified organic, they’re vegan, they’re non-GMO (which is super amazing), there’s no preservatives, and that good list goes on and on. Our palates just aren’t used to the saltiness of the cracker which is actually a good thing.
The last time I reviewed a box of Late July crackers was back in December 2012 and my review was similar. Fast forward to 2015 and we’re testing a different product but the results are roughly the same. We like the flavour of the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers but just can’t bring ourselves to consume that much sodium in one serving! I mean, when was the last time you were satisfied eating only 4 crackers?
For me? NEVER.
Our family needs a more sodium neutral cracker that is secure enough to be paired with other food items. Back in December 2014, we reviewed Suzie’s Organic Saltines with salt and extra virgin olive oil. Those crackers seemed to be better balanced for our taste buds. Each serving of the Suzie’s Organic Saltines with salt and extra virgin olive oil served up 11% of your daily intake of sodium but did so through a pack of 8 crackers or 31 grams. It’s a slight sodium difference compared to the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers but it’s noticeable. They certainly didn’t taste as salty as the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers and the word ‘oil’ only showed up once on that ingredient list.
In my humble opinion, there’s an incredibly easy fix to make these Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers that much better: get rid of the salt on top of the cracker. If it’s not too much trouble, reduce the amount of oil used. For now, the Late July Organic Classic Saltine Crackers will stay on the lower end of the ‘eat in moderation’ category.
Just goes to show you that the word ‘organic’ doesn’t always guarantee a successful review!
