Not too long ago, I posted my experience of making my own chocolate pudding. I’d never done it before and I was surprised that it wasn’t as tough as I’d thought it would be. The best part, I knew exactly what I’d put in to the chocolate pudding. If I wanted to, I could modify the sugar amount and maybe in the future, I could even jazz it up a bit. I have no idea HOW I’d jazz it up. I haven’t figured that out yet but the point being, I’d have the option to do so. You get that kind of freedom when you make your own stuff.
It then got me wondering: what’s in the store bought stuff?
I browsed the grocery aisle and came across this Snack Pack chocolate pudding. Ingredients used? Let’s take a look:
Water, skim milk from concentrate (water, concentrated skim milk), modified corn starch, high oleic sunflower oil, cocoa maltitol, modified palm oil, salt, carrageenan, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, acesulfame potassium, artificial vanilla flavour, sucralose.
Well, that’s a mouthful.
What did I use to make my first batch of chocolate pudding? I used the recipe off the box of Let’s Do Organic Cornstarch. Here’s a pic of the recipe I used:
Potato, Po Tay Toe?
I don’t know.
I didn’t buy the pack of Snack Pack chocolate pudding so I have no idea what it tastes like but I’m sure it’s delicious if you’re in to chocolate pudding and I’m sure it’s a decent substitute if you don’t have time to make it from scratch. Given that I’m not a big fan of chocolate pudding, I don’t really see myself buying it any time soon especially now that I know I have the capacity to make my own.
Maybe that’s a lesson I’ve learned: when you have the skill set to make food (or know someone who’s a great cook) you now know you’re not limited to the choices in at the grocery store! That’s pretty empowering when you consider my culinary capacity a few years ago.
