A little while back ThingsThatWeDo.com reviewed the Enjoy Life Cocoa Loco Baked Chewy Bars. They were yummy, decadent, delicious, and would easily replace any chocolate bar out there. Thanks to Enjoy Life, ThingsThatWeDo.com received samples of their Baked Chewy Bars.

Today’s post is going to dissect the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars. It’ll be interesting to see if these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars are as good as their Coco Loco cousins.
Product Review: What ingredients are in the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars?

Here are the ingredients in the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars: tapioca syrup, vegetable glycerin, rice crisps (rice flour, rice bran, raisin juice concentrate, honey, salt), brown pure cane sugar, evaporated cane juice, expeller pressed vegetable oil (safflower oil and/or sunflower oil), date paste, rice starch, white rich flour, sulfite free dried cranberries (cranberries, cane sugar, sunflower oil), golden flaxseed, sunflower seed butter (roasted sunflower kernel, evaporated cane juice, salt), pre-cooked quinoa flakes, light buckwheat flour, puffed amaranth, millet flour, freeze dried strawberries, natural flavour, baking soda, xanthan gum, salt, vanilla, malic acid (natural flavour enhancer), vitamins and minerals (vitamin B3, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, folic acid, calcium).

Well, that’s not a long list at all is it? I think my eyes went blurry after trying to read and type all that out! So, long list of ingredients, that much is for sure however, there is no denying that the list of ingredients in the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars is certainly better than most processed bars that are out there. I mean, for one there’s no BHT so that’s a good thing. You don’t see corn syrup or other gunky stuff like that but then again, you know these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars will also give your body a definite hit of sugar (8 grams per 28 gram bar). The source of sugar just mostly comes from better forms like evaporated cane juice instead of all the fructose, glucose and other –ose stuff.

In terms of what each 28 gram Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar offers you, you also get 30% thiamin, 30% riboflavin, 30% niacin, 25% vitamin B6, 30% folate. Those are pretty high numbers that your average big brand bar won’t give you.

The question now is: how will these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars taste?

How do the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars taste?

Take a look at the individual Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar. It’s not very big, 28 grams doesn’t seem to go very far so I’m guessing this will be a pretty dense bar. I open up the package and take a good look at it. You can see the little grains and whatnot that went into the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar.

BUT.

I don’t like the way it smells.

You see, I’m not a big fan of berry bars of any type because I always find they smell a little off like artificial berries sitting in a package waiting for me to consume because I have no other options. I haven’t taken a bite yet but I’m not really liking the way the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar smells. Now, it doesn’t smell as artificial as the other big brand berry bars but it’s not inspiring much hope at this point.

Okay, big leap…I take a bite.

Um…it’s OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKAY but I’m not doing backflips.

The good news is, the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars doesn’t taste too sweet but it’s sweeter than I need it to be. There is the noticeable berry like taste that is currently on my tongue but it tastes off and a tad artificial (I’m biting into it as I type but there is a definite frown on my face). This Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar has a slight crunch from the crisps and grains and has a brownie like consistency so it is on the chewy side but I am not liking the flavour composition of this Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bar.

What’s wrong with the Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars? Well, there’s either too much evaporated cane juice or too much date paste or it needs more sunflower seed butter. I’m done eating the bar (thank goodness it’s only 28 grams) but I’m still frowning because I’m not liking the aftertaste.

Verdict:

Enjoy Life, thank you so very much for sending me your new Baked Chewy Bars to sample and test. As you’ll know from my earlier post, our family loved the Coco Loco bars but these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars are just NOT for me. I’m grateful for all the riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, folate, vitamin B6 that is currently floating in my body but I am not liking the flavour of these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars. I want to like them because I appreciate the choice of ingredients (minus all the sweet stuff) but the taste just does not appeal to me.

My plan: share the remaining bars with others and see what they think about these Enjoy Life Mixed Berry Baked Chewy Bars. The effort is there but this one needs a bit more tweaking.
