Of all the products I’ve reviewed for ThingsThatWeDo.com, the Crastan Orzo Pupo is one of the most surprising finds I’ve come across.
There I was, at my local little grocery store browsing the aisles when I spot this container of Crastan Orzo Pupo. Intrigued, I picked it up and read the label. Ingredients: instant BARLEY?
No way, a barley drink? That’s different and right up my alley. You see, coffees and teas are quite alright (rooibos tea is quite yummy by the way) but I always look for other warm drinks to enjoy when the weather gets cooler. Hot apple cider is delicious but far too sweet and I wanted to branch out.
A warm barley beverage? Now that’s interesting.
Food review: What ingredients are in the Crastan Orzo Pupo?
Take a closer look, I kid you not, the Crastan Orzo Pupo is made with only barley. I visited the website, intrigued as I was and learned the barley is roasted and caffeine free (bonus!).
That’s it. I mean, can it get any simpler than that?
Food review: you’ll never guess what Crastan Orzo Pupo tastes like
I read the instructions on the canister of Crastan Orzo Pupo and it looked simple enough. Take 2 teaspoons of Crastan Orzo Pupo, add hot water or hot milk and sugar to taste, stir, and enjoy.
Open the canister and this is what I saw: tiny minute little granules of instant barley. I honestly had no idea how this would all turn out.
I followed the instructions, opting for the hot water version (didn’t feel like hot milk) and gave it a stir. Boy was I surprised.
Instantly, I was greeted with a very strong coffee like fragrance. If I hadn’t read the word ‘barley’ with my own eyes I would have been convinced I’d just made instant coffee. I tasted the Crastan Orzo Pupo plain and yep, it tasted like a light black coffee.
I added a bit of organic coconut sugar as I would my regular cup of java with a touch of cream, and gave it another stir.
This is what I got.
Looks like coffee, right?
The taste however, completely boggled my mind. While I’m fully aware that the Crastan Orzo Pupo is made with barley, to me, it tasted nothing like barley at all (maybe a barely noticeable hint if at all). Instead, the Crastan Orzo Pupo really did taste like a nice gentle cup of coffee that wasn’t too strong or overwhelming. If I had to choose one word to describe my cup of Crastan Orzo Pupo it would be: smooth.
I happily sat in my chair sipping away content to enjoy my cup of Orzo Pupo. The rich coffee like smell permeated the air and just made me happy. Best of all, I didn’t have to worry about any added caffeine intake!
The Crastan Orzo Pupo is now my go-to drink when I want something warm and relaxing. It’s an easy drink that just makes me happy. I love the smell, I love how smooth it is, and I love that it’s made with barley!
