Summer time…ice cream…they go hand in hand. Correction: ice cream goes hand in hand all year long.

Yes, that’s my current mindset. Come rain or shine, ice cream can be a wonderful experience so long as it’s one you like.

A recent trip to my local Loblaws landed me with this tub of PC chocolate crunch ice cream. While I’m not a fan of chocolate in general, I quite like chocolate ice cream and I knew my big kid would appreciate the treat. Confession: the ingredients probably could be better but it was on sale, it had the word ‘crunch’ in its name, and well, I wanted to try it. So there.

Product Review: What ingredients are in the PC chocolate crunch ice cream? - PC chocolate ice creamHere’s a list of ingredients that went into the PC chocolate crunch ice cream: cream, sugar, modified milk ingredients, chocolate pieces (sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla extract, salt), cocoa, glucose solids, mono- and diglycerides, cellulose gum, guar gum, polysorbate 80, carrageenan. May contain peanuts and tree nuts. Ice cream base made with 100% Canadian milk.

Thoughts on the ingredient list? Well, it’s ice cream and it’s chocolate ice cream so I knew it wouldn’t be a simple list. Then again, I’ve seen other brands of ice cream that have a much shorter list of quality ingredients. The good news: the PC chocolate crunch ice cream is made with cream and sugar and cocoa. I could do without the modified milk ingredients, mono and diglycerides, cellulose gum, guar gum, polysorbate 80, carrageenan but the list isn’t as bad as it could be. I knew what I was getting in to when I picked up the tub.

Let’s just say this tub of PC chocolate crunch ice cream is definitely a ‘sometime’ treat.

Product Test: how does the PC chocolate crunch ice cream taste? - PC chocolate ice creamLook, it’s ice cream. How bad could it be (minus the review I did back on July 24, 2011 on Breyer’s Double Churn Natural chocolate ice cream. That was hideous.)?

Crack open the tub of PC chocolate crunch ice cream and my big kid is ready to test it, spoon at the ready. We both tested it and we both liked the PC chocolate crunch ice cream. It’s noticeably chocolaty without being too sweet which we liked. The chocolate bits stayed crunchy and really add to the textural experience of eating it. My daughter happily devoured her portion.

What did I do? - PC chocolate crunch ice creamWell, what makes sense of course – I added a dollop of organic crunchy peanut butter. Talk about a great pairing. Instead of buying chocolate peanut butter ice cream with questionable ingredients (I’m still looking at you Nestle with your tasty but completely weird PB Drumsticks), I add some element of quality control by using organic peanut butter that I already know and love from my own fridge.

End result: divine.

So, would I buy the PC chocolate crunch ice cream again? I’m not sure. It’s certainly yummy enough for a second purchase and while the ingredients are super great, they also not super terrible.

A quick comparison: the PC chocolate crunch ice cream has 17 grams of sugar per ½ cup (125 mL). Compared to the abomination that Nestle calls a chocolate peanut butter Drumstick which has 26 grams of sugar for 1 cone (140 mL), the PC chocolate crunch ice cream is by far a better option. - PC chocolate crunch ice creamOn the other hand, there are better chocolate ice cream options out there that have better ingredients. No doubt about it, they cost a bit more and they certainly do have a great flavour profile.

Thus, I think it’s a matter of personal preference, timing, and what I might want to eat as part of my whole ‘eat in moderation’ philosophy. Eat healthy everywhere else makes it a whole lot easier to justify eating the PC chocolate crunch ice cream which truthfully is really good and has semi-decent ingredients. Based on the few brands of ice cream that we’ve tested on, there are some brands of ice cream (like Breyers) that I just won’t go back to. PC chocolate crunch ice cream, on the other hand, is something I wouldn’t mind having again…and again…and again..oh my.
