thingsthatwedo.com - barbaras cheez puffsSometimes, you just need a little treat. That’s where Barbara’s Cheez Puffs comes in to my home. My daughter and I both love cheesies and well, so does the hubby. We look for goodies that are yummy and better than the average pile of goop. Lo and behold, there’s Barbara’s Cheez Puffs sitting at my grocery store shelf.

You can see by the disheveled look of the bag that we thoroughly enjoyed the cheez puffs before I had a chance to take a photo of the bag.

Oops!

Product Review: What ingredients are in Barbara’s Cheez Puffs?

Here are the ingredients that went into making Barbara’s Cheez Puffs: non-GMO yellow cornmeal, non-GMO expeller pressed high oleic oil (canola, sunflower or safflower), aged cheddar cheese (pasteurized milk, salt, annatto extract, cheese cultures, natural enzymes), whey (milk), buttermilk, salt, butter, blue cheese (pasteurized milk, salt, cheese cultures, natural enzymes), lactic acid, annatto and paprika extracts.

When was the last time your bag of cheesies was made with non-GMO cornmeal? Pretty cool, huh? Don’t get me wrong, I totally see that oil is the second ingredient. Non-GMO or not, oil is oil. At the same time, they’re cheesies not cheese so I understand that the list isn’t going to be perfect but at least I know the names of ingredients.

Product review: So how do Barbara’s Cheez Puffs taste?

Barbara’s Cheez Puffs are exactly what I want in a cheesie.

They’re crunchy, they’re cheesy, but they do have a different taste than the typical cheesie. I think it comes from the use of aged cheddar cheese and the blue cheese. It has that older cheddar taste which I love. They also have a slightly different colour and shape than the usual cheesie which again, I’m completely okay with.

Verdict:

What can I say? My daughter and I both really like Barbara’s Cheez Puffs. They’re what you’d expect from a bag of cheesies made with decent ingredients. On sale, Barbara’s Cheez Puffs are about the same price as your average bag of cheesies.

Why am I saying all of this? The existence of Barbara’s Cheez Puffs means we consumers have options. Without options, we’d be stuck with very limited choices and while it may only be a ‘sometimes’ food, it’s still a choice I appreciate having.
