I like cheese almost as much as I like peanut butter but I’ve never heard of L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese until recently. I noticed the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese sitting there on the shelf and was intrigued because it was extra sharp cheddar cheese and I ENJOY extra sharp cheddar cheese. Another draw: I’ve never had cheese made with unpasteurized milk before. How will it taste? Will I like it? Will I be grossed out? I have no clue.

So… L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese, what are you made with? Have a careful look because this is the list of ingredients for L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese: organic unpasteurized milk, bacterial culture, salt, and microbial enzyme. That’s it. Wow, I’m impressed. The L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese is also animal rennet free, gluten free, and lactose free. Interesting. I wonder what it’ll taste like.
Product Review: How does the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese taste?
Open the packaging and the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese smells sooooo good. It has the signature tart fragrance characteristic of most extra sharp cheeses. I cut my first slice and it’s quite crumbly and firm and it smells so intoxicatingly yummy.
I take my first bite and yep, the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese certainly holds its own. The flavour is fitting of an extra sharp cheddar cheese. The L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese has a strong, rich kick to it, salty yet sharp but not overly salty. There was a harmonious balance that I really appreciated. I don’t know if I can tell what the difference is in using unpasteurized milk. All I tasted was pure yum.
I have no idea what the significance is of using unpasteurized milk to make the cheese and I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive of eating the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese because of it. However, after talking to the staff at my local health food store I learned that L’ancetre is a reputable company and its products are carefully made. Truthfully, I have a lot of faith in my local health food store because they’re quite picky about what they let in to their store (they even do yearly audits on the farms that that provide the meats that they carry).
Back to the L’ancetre extra sharp cheddar cheese. I really liked it and would happily enjoy it again. The flavour was easy and smooth with all the qualities of an extra sharp cheddar that I really love: salty, sharp, and pungently fragrant.
