I drink almond milk. I know it’s not real milk and technically not almond ‘milk’ but that’s what I like to call it. I prefer sweetened almond milk but I thought I’d give the unsweetened almond beverages a try too. I mean, do I really need the sugar? NOPE. I just like the taste. So, why not give the unsweetened ones a try?

For today’s taste test, I chose the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage. Why? It was on sale. At under $2 for a 946 mL container, I thought it was a great deal. I just hope my palate thanks me!

Product Review: What ingredients are in Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage?

Here is the list of ingredients that went into the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage: filtered water, almonds, inulin (chicory root fibre), tricalcium phosphate, canola oil, tapioca starch, sea salt, gellan gum, sunflower lecithin, carrageenan, natural flavours, zinc oxide, riboflavin, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12.

I’ve reviewed a number of almond beverages now and I’ve come to the realization that they’re usually made with a number of different ingredients. It’s hard for me to say which combination is better or worse. I think it comes down to a matter of personal consumer preference. Take the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage. Overall, it sounds okay made with filtered water and all but I’m not a big fan of canola oil (after all, it’s not real) so that’s a bit of a turn off.

I reviewed the Silk True Almond Unsweetened almond beverage a while back and it did not have canola oil as an ingredient so right there it has an edge up for me over the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage.

On the other hand, like most other almond beverages, the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage offers a lot of calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, and phosphorus. That’s not bad for one little beverage.

How does the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage taste?

I’m a little apprehensive about unsweetened almond beverages. Why? Well, once upon a time a long while ago (before I tried the Silk True Almond Unsweetened almond beverage) , I tried a particular brand of unsweetened almond beverage and it was GROSS. It wasn’t because it was unsweetened. For some reason, that particular brand of unsweetened almond beverage actually tasted as though they’d put salt in the drink. It was wretched. So…my impression of unsweetened almond beverages isn’t very positive.

Deep breath.

Open the box of Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage and it smells like regular almond milk so that’s a good thing.  The cup on the left is the almond beverage. The one on the right is an organic milk. Looks pretty much the same, huh?  Like most other almond milks, it also has a bit of an almond tint to it which is to be expected, of course.

I take a wee sip and hey, it’s not bad. The Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage reminds me of its sweetened version but without the sweet. I know, it sounds like an odd comment.

The good news is, the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage doesn’t remind me of that salty unsweetened almond beverage that still haunts me. It’s smooth and flavourful with a nice hint of almonds. I didn’t think I’d say this but it’s not bad, not bad at all.

Verdict:

The Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage is a pretty good drink. Despite the use of canola oil, the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage tastes good. It’s creamy, smooth, and makes for a good source of calcium. While I prefer sweetened almond milk, the Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage make a good option for those who don’t want the added sweetness. Both the Silk True Almond Unsweetened almond beverage and Natur-a Almond unsweetened enriched almond beverage hold their own so it’s really just a matter of personal preferences.
