Coconut, you either love it or you hate it. Our family: we love coconut. In the past, I’d get coconut milk in a can to add to our curries and other yummy dishes. With the whole BPA thing floating around, we’ve eliminated canned goods from our home.
Translation: no more yummy canned coconut milk. Sure, I know it’s possible that not all canned coconut is lined with BPA but why take the chance especially when I have OTHER options?
Enter Artisana organic coconut butter. Back in May 2011 when ThingsThatWeDo.com first started doing product reviews, I featured a similar product by Nutiva. Since then, I haven’t really seen it in my local health food store. Why did I pick up the Artisana organic coconut butter? To be frank, it was the only coconut butter they had! Everything else in a glass jar was coconut oil which wasn’t what I was looking for.
The good news: Artisana organic coconut butter did not disappoint!

Product Review: how does Artisana organic coconut butter taste?
On the day that I tried the Artisana organic coconut butter, I decided to make a coconut rice dish using a variety of different grains. To do so, I needed coconut butter.
Open the jar of Artisana organic coconut butter and you can smell the beauty of coconut permeating the air. This is yum in a jar. As noted in the instructions, there was separation of the coconut oil that naturally rested at the top. Although the instructions told me to warm up the jar to mix well, I couldn’t be bothered.
Instead, I poked a spoon into my jar of Artisana organic coconut butter and tried to get a good mix of both the coconut oil and the coconut. It wasn’t easy but I managed. Before adding it to my rice mix, I took a taste of the Artisana organic coconut butter. As expected, the flavour of coconut is natural and isn’t sweet. It’s rich and it’s thick.
I add the Artisana organic coconut butter into my rice mix. As the heat warms up the coconut butter, the smell is intoxicating and vibrant. Add a little organic cane sugar, I can’t wait for dinner to start!
That night, the entire family happily devours the coconut rice. There’s something magical that happens when you add a little coconut butter and cane sugar to make a simple coconut rice dish. Add a few different grains like spelt and Japonica and this dish just couldn’t get any better.
My daughter actually loves having some Artisana organic coconut butter on the side with her morning breakfast at times. It also tastes really yummy with a little honey drizzled on top of toast. Today’s post isn’t really about buying Artisana organic coconut butter as it is about knowing that you have choices. You don’t have to buy canned coconut when there are other things you can use that are equally good!
