It doesn’t take much to make a kid happy. Take a look at this little unassuming red package. Inside this little container happens to be one of the most fascinating things on the planet (at least from a child’s perspective and maybe for some adults too).
Yes, ladies and gentleman, it’s Silly Putty.
Silly Putty seems to mesmerize most children. A solid but kind of like a liquid, Silly Putty can be rolled, squished, pulled, tugged, snapped, pulverized, and more and it never gives up. I’ve seen children with their lumps of Silly Putty, fidgeting away. I’ve seen others have competitions on the stairs trying to see whose lump of Silly Putty will bounce fastest down the stairs.
My big kid absolutely loves Silly Putty, she always has, always will and I can completely understand why.
Like playdough, Silly Putty is an open ended material that gives children the freedom to explore, create, and relieve stress. You can do a million different things with it. You can squeeze it, pull it, bounce it, flatten it, snap it, trap air inside it to hear the air bubbles pop when you squish it. I could go on and on and on but the best thing about Silly Putty is that you can really just squish it and squish it and squish it.
Over the past few years, it seems like Silly Putty has added a few new elements. Santa brought my big kid Silly Putty that would change to a different colour while in use. That’s pretty cool and I’m sure that feature wasn’t around when I was a child.
Silly Putty is incredibly cathartic and can be particularly rewarding after a really stressful or eventful day. Best of all, Silly Putty provides a medium for children to hone their creativity. I mean, how many different ways are there to use it? What can you do with Silly Putty? There’s also a lot of problem solving as well (trust me, parents, Silly Putty doesn’t always agree with all surfaces and can lead to some pretty big messes if not handled carefully).
When all is said and done, Silly Putty is a child’s dream. There is so much to do with it and really, you’re only limited by your own imagination. It’s no wonder Silly Putty has been around for so long and still continues to be loved by so many kids!
