Not that I don’t already sound like a broken record (OMG, I’m dating myself. How many people actually even know what a record player is?!) but I don’t think it’s a secret that I’m not a big fan of chocolate. My big kid likes chocolate and I do concede to occasionally liking chocolate but quite often, I’d rather skip it for something savoury.

I have this friend who found a phenomenal deal on Brookside chocolates. If you know the Brookside brand, you know it usually costs at least $4 for a bag. Well, my pal went to a store and found them on sale for $2 which means I scored myself a free bag of Brookside Dark Chocolate Fruit Crunch. She tells me she loves it and that I must try it and that I’ll love it too.

Well, here we are. I’ve got a bag in my hands and she’s begging me to try it. Fine, fine, fine….

Let’s hope she’s right. – Continue Reading

Just when I think life can’t get any better on a dreary, dark, and gloomy snowy day (I can’t wait until Spring), I get a surprise in the mail.

One box. It looks relatively unassuming until I see the sender and I open the box. Inside: decadent goodies from Camino.

Translation: one very happy child who opened the box and said, “There’s milk chocolate in there. A lot of it!!”

Talk about a happy child. She unpacked, re-packed, unpacked, and re-packed that box over and over again. She scrutinized every label, commented on every product, and made decisions about which ones she’d try and which ones were designated for me (hint: I definitely got the coffee).

Truth be told, we’ve both been a little under the weather lately and have yet to dive into our Camino goodies. We haven’t even TOUCHED the Halloween stash yet and if past years are any indication, we likely won’t touch much of it. I mean, why would you if you’ve got an entire box of Camino beckoning you?

I mean, talk about motivation for getting better!

Put Winter 2014 aside, both the big kid and I can’t wait to start testing out all the Camino products. Thank you again, Camino for the generous gift!

See this bag of Thinsations Chips Ahoy! Thin Crisp cookies? It was given to me as a treat for snack. You may not believe this but I really don’t ever recall trying it before so I figured I could review it for ThingsThatWeDo.com. I mean, I’ve seen these little Thinsations snacks everywhere and I’ve had some of the other ones before but I’ve never been enticed to try the Chips Ahoy! Version. – Continue Reading

It’s no secret that I like the occasional crunchy snack. I used to like potato chips and I still do, sort of, but they just haven’t held my interest of late. So, I look for other crunchy alternatives and discovered Stacy’s Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips. Back in September 2012, I reviewed Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips which I kind of liked (at least more than potato chips). Almost 2 years later I find the cinnamon sugar version and I’m intrigued to try it. A crunchy, sweet treat? Hm…

Updated post: October 24, 2014. Call me clueless or maybe I just fell asleep with my eyes wide open? I owe the folks at Camino a HUGE apology. My early post on Oct. 15, 2014 noted that their bittersweet chocolate chips weren’t organic. What was I THINKING? They’re clearly marked as ORGANIC right there on the packaging. Thank goodness I include photos in my posts! Apologies to our readers for the confusion if any. I am definitely human, no spam posting here! Thank you to the folks at Camino for contacting me as well so that I could do this update post!!

Chocolate is not my favourite word in the alphabet, you know that, but it doesn’t mean I don’t eat it. My big kid happens to like chocolate and I do on very rare occasions. If my big kid is going to eat chocolate, I’d like her to eat something that isn’t completely disgusting and filled with garbage.

Enter Camino Bittersweet chocolate chips. The Camino Bittersweet chocolate chips were on sale so I picked up a bag to test out. We sometimes make chocolate pancakes or chocolate chip cookies so it doesn’t hurt to have some decent chocolate at home.

Question is: are your chocolate chips made as well as these ones? – Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - nutella and goCopyright© 2014 ThingsThatWeDo.com. All Rights Reserved.

I’m in the grocery store and I come across this gigantic display. I look and oh! It’s nutella. I know nutella, everyone pretty much knows nutella but this was a little different. It’s a new kind of packaging like nutella with a twist called nutella & GO!

Question is, would you nutella & GO!?

You see, I wouldn’t. Sure, the display was enticing and the nutella & GO! looks really neat but I’m a label reader and I’ve read the nutella label before and I didn’t like it then so unless they did something drastic to their recipe, I was 99.999990% sure I wouldn’t buy it. – Continue Reading

Once upon a time, I was a gum chewer but those days are over. The more I know, the less I buy. Most chewing gum just isn’t made the way I want them to be. So, I looked for alternatives because quite frankly, no one likes stinky breath.

Enter Vermints. The vibrant red metal box was too cool to pass up but even better was the list of ingredients that was so NOT like the ingredients listed on the average pack of gum. I happen to like cinnamon so, Vermints came home with me and it’s been a blast ever since.

I roam the grocery store sometimes. I’ll wander, I’ll browse and sometimes I’ll spot a product I’ve never seen before. Then, I’ll pick up said product to investigate a little further. Sometimes, I’ll buy it. Sometimes, I’ll leave it where it is.

Here’s a box of David Iced Oatmeal Cookies. It calls itself ‘an indulgent iced oatmeal cookie’. I was intrigued so I picked up the box and did a little reading.

Then, I put the box of David Iced Oatmeal Cookies right back down.

No, I’m not a big fan of chocolate. Friends know I only occasionally eat chocolate and when I do, I’m picky about it. If you’ve read some of my chocolate reviews you’ll know some are hits but most are duds.

That doesn’t mean I don’t like a sweet treat because really, there are times when a sweet treat is needed and chocolate just isn’t going to cut it. Have you ever tried baklava? It’s sweet, decadent, rich, and really one bite is all you need to satisfy any sweet tooth you might be having.

thingsthatwedo.com pic - baklavaI have no idea how to make baklava but I’m sure it requires a whole lot of phyllo pastry, honey or some other sugary syrup, likely some butter since it seems to go hand and hand with phyllo, and in mine, some pistachios. There’s probably some cinnamon or another spice in there too, not sure what. In any case, baklava is insanely sweet and it makes me happy.
Maybe it isn’t just baklava that gives me good feelings but the memories that I have attached with it. You see, my first piece of baklava came as a gift. Since then, baklava has been given to me as tokens of appreciation. Somewhere along the way the two became synonymous.

Take a moment from your busy schedule and think of all those precious connections you’ve made along the way. Take time to appreciate, to thank, to pay it forward. You’ll never know what new connections you might be making!
