Soaps, shampoos. You know, the stuff that gets all sudsy. Most of that stuff is full of questionable chemicals (sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS, I’m staring right at you) so if I can, I try to test other options to see if they’d be a good fit for our family.

On this particular occasion, I picked up a bottle of Andalou Naturals Sunflower and Citrus Shampoo. Why this one? Well, mainly because the Andalou Naturals Sunflower and Citrus Shampoo was designed for colour treated hair and yep, I do dye my hair (see the Herbatint review I do way back when). I’ve been looking for a natural shampoo that will work with colour treated hair and my sensitive skin. Fingers crossed the Andalou Naturals Sunflower and Citrus Shampoo will work for me!

I don’t know about you but I like having clean hair. I’m not neurotic by any means but I like having clean hair. My hair guy however (you know, the one who cuts the hair and makes me look human) isn’t too pleased at how often I cut my hair. The recommendation: wash my hair once every 4 days.

WHAT?!

Is that evenly humanly okay?

So…I uh, kind of ignored that recommendation and at most, over the years the most I’ve been able to stretch it is to wash my hair every other day. Just can’t seem to go past that.

Then came another suggestion from a gal pal at work. According to her hair guy, the suggestion is to wash your hair with shampoo once a week maybe but then when you feel your hair needs a wash, wash with conditioner only.

HUH.

Say what?

I’ve never heard of THAT before.

Okay, so I try it out and guess what?

IT WORKS.

As I write this post, I’ve been testing out this theory for a good 2-3 weeks. The first day, I washed my hair with shampoo. Then, when my hair needed a wash I used only conditioner as in I wet my hair, lathered it with conditioner, rinsed it off, dried it, and that was it.

That was the weirdest experience. My hair felt clean but it was a different kind of clean and my scalp certainly felt clean and yet I didn’t use shampoo. Next time I needed a wash, I did the same thing – just conditioner. After a week, I used shampoo and continued the same cycle.

So, how does my hair feel now?

My hair feels great! It’s actually a lot smoother, silkier, and better hydrated than it has been in a long time. My scalp feels great and oddly enough I don’t feel like I need to wash my hair every other day anymore. It’s almost like my hair and scalp have balanced themselves out. Dare I say my hair and scalp feel healthier?

All I know is, my hair feels better, my scalp feels way better, and I really have been able to stretch how often I wash my hair with shampoo.

I’ll keep you all posted on how this new hair regime works out but in the meantime, if you have hair issues you may just want to try this technique out too!

If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll know that I love the coconut (think back to the Nutiva coconut manna spread and the coconut snowballs we made) so is it any wonder that I couldn’t resist buying the Organix Nourishing coconut milk shampoo? On top of that, it was a value size bottle with 50% more (cool!) and it was a decent price at $5.99 for a 577mL bottle. Sure, it’s not free which would have been awesome but hey, it had coconut! I popped the shampoo lid open at the store to take a little smell and have to admit that it smelled divinely coconut so here I am reviewing it for ThingsThatWeDo.com.

In recent years, I’ve taken to dyeing my hair, not because I’m full blown grey, but because I have really dark hair and the white hairs I do have stick out like a sore thumb (okay, a bunch of sore thumbs). I’ll admit, sometimes, I’ll just pick up whatever is on sale and will do my own hair dyeing job. It’s not pretty or glamourous but it gets the job done. Those who know me know that I’m a lazy person. If it takes too many steps, I just won’t do it because I’d rather spend my time doing something else I find more productive. Gosh, I’m sure a newbie with hair colouring, I don’t even know if I’m supposed to call it hair colour, hair dye, or something else? Be patient with me, I am incredibly new at this hair colouring thing! - Continue Reading
