First post of 2017: it’s “good bye 2016” and “HELLO, 2017”. I, for one, am happy to see 2017 arrive. I don’t know about you but 2016 was quite the hectic year for me (mostly work related so I’m so glad that chapter is DONE.). The Christmas holidays were a welcomed treat that I really really REALLY needed. Family, friends, food, laughter, and some much needed R and R, I mean life is great when there’s time to appreciate the simple things in life.

As you can tell by this somewhat tardy post, I took my time getting back into the swing of things. With the holiday festivities slowly winding down, I can already sense the increasing back-to-work angst. You see, I decided to take a few extra days off so I wouldn’t go back to work right after January 1. While I greatly appreciate the extra time at home, I can feel the ever rising ‘OMG, I have to go back to work’ brewing at the back of my brain screaming to make its way into my every waking thought. However, I’m determined to not let that voice win.

After all, Spring is RIGHT around the corner. I can feel it already. Sure, it’s still freezing outside but Winter Solstice has come and gone and the days are getting longer and longer.  It’s no longer pitch dark when I get off work = BONUS!!! It’s really only a matter of time.

In this very moment, I choose to focus on positive things. Life is too short and I’m too good at fretting to do otherwise. So, to kick off 2017, here are some of my current favourites:

Food – oh wait, that’s not a new favourite. It happens to be an ongoing favourite as are family and friends! Silly me. However, all three deserve an ongoing mention because quite frankly, without them, life just wouldn’t be what it is. Over the holidays, I shared more stories with family and friends including one particularly captivating memory that involved a chimney, a present, a door bell, and Santa. Brilliant!

The new Pentatonix Christmas album (sure it’s not NEW anymore per se and it may not be Christmas anymore but I’m still listening to it!)

www.recipetineats.com – this is a food blog website that I recently discovered over the holidays with fantastic recipes. I made pikelets (delicious) and flatbread (also delicious) using recipes from the site and I’m this close to creating a fan club for Nagi, the magician behind the site.

So, long story short: embrace 2017. In a time when the world is going topsy turvy, it’s easy to fall flat on your face in despair. Choose to be positive, to make the world better for those around you whether with a smile or a kind word. Random acts of kindness are still a favourite of mine. I’ve done a few already and it’s only January 3rd!

thingsthatwedo.com book review - land of stories

My big kid loves to read, has loved reading ever since she was a teeny weeny and continues to love reading. Today’s post is about The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. Book 1, The Wishing Spell is featured in the photo but this really isn’t much of a book review as it is a huge ‘thank you’ to authors like Chris Colfer for breathing life into words. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - the laughing cow party cubes

I occasionally like to try new things. It really depends on my mood. Some days, I’m a bit more adventurous. Other days, I go with the same old, same old. I’m also incredibly lazy (or as I like to call it, I’m efficiently lazy. Translation: I move lightning fast to get tasks done so I have more time to do nothing). Being incredibly lazy means I’m not always up for the effort of trying something new.

Well, today, I decided to try something new: Laughing Cow Party Cubes. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - chameleonI love the smell of freshly cut ginger. It’s so rich, so intense, and so so very fragrant. I use fresh ginger in a number of dishes and it never disappoints. Over the past few years, our family switched to using organic ginger because it tasted better and by better, I mean stronger. What I’d need 3 or 4 slices of regular ginger to accomplish, I could do it with just a few thin slices of organic ginger do pack the same punch and boy did each piece pack a kick.

I’m not kidding. A little sliver of organic ginger goes a really long way. I’ve used it to make fresh ginger tea with a good helping of honey (I hate getting sick) and I’ve used organic ginger in a number of different stir fries.

Now, I’m not a ginger expert by any means but sometimes things catch me a little off guard.

Case in point, see picture below. - Continue Reading

ygi-web-graphic-2015

A while back I posted about this fantastic Young Games Inventor of the Year contest. Well, a select number of games have been chosen and it’s now time to vote! Take a moment, go to the BrainBox website, and check out all the different games children in the UK have come up with.

What a demonstration of creativity. Creativity means more than just coming up with some random idea for a game. It takes ingenuity, originality, and a ton of brain work. It’s about making new connections between familiar objects and ideas and coming up with something completely outside the box and that’s just for starters! I haven’t even mentioned all the passion and devotion it takes to make an idea come to life.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit the Brainbox site and vote now!

thingsthatwedo.com - transformers power core combiners mudslinger destructicons

Going through old images on ThingsThatWeDo.com and I come across umpteen images of various Transformers characters.

Ah…Transformers… more than meets the eye indeed.

When I was a kid, there were a ton of children’s cartoons that I loved to watch. I may be dating myself but I still remember watching shows like Thundercats, Voltron, and yep, Transformers. The story lines were action packed and intense. Fast forward to 2015 and Transfomers are still a hot topic for kids.

A few years back, my daughter was quite enthralled by Transformers. She watched the first Transformers movie and was then hooked on all the different characters. She watched a few of the recent TV episodes and even a few from my childhood days. She read Transformers books, had Transformers toys, and even opted for a Transformers birthday cake.

Children are children first. Boy or girl, all children love to play and learn through play. Why limit their creative capacity by categorizing toys as ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’? My my, how quickly time flies. Transformers are now a distant memory in our home and while she kept all her Bumblebees, Arcees, and Optimus Primes, she’s moved on to other interests (The Mysterious Benedict Society, anyone?). Some days, it’s puffy paint in neon colours. Other days, it’s her rock collection.

Whatever it is, there’s always so much to learn and so much to appreciate.

Yep, this is a good Sunday.
