Let me start off by telling you that I didn’t pay for this product. My husband, daughter, and I were walking down a busy downtown street and noticed a large group of orange shirts handing out ‘something’ to people. We had no clue what they were doing but eventually we caught up to their slower pace and discovered that they were handing out these Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meals. I asked if I could read the ingredient list and was surprised that they weren’t any crazy chemicals so I thanked them for the samples and took them home.  So, can you guess what I’m going to tell you?

Product review: What happened?

One day at lunch, I decided to try the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal. It came in 2 separately sealed containers, one for the rice and one for the sauce. It claims that all I have to do is microwave them for 90 seconds and I’ll have a meal ready for me. The people in orange shirts also told me the same thing, but there was NO WAY I was going to stick a plastic container into the microwave when I could use a glass plate so that’s what I did. When I opened the sauce container, I noticed that my teriyaki seemed a little gelatinous but thought it might look better after it got warmed up. I poured my sauce on top of the rice and microwaved it on a ceramic plate for the designated 90 seconds.
Here is where I pause and try to be professionally positive and not completely bash this product to smithereens. This Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal is saved by the one fact that they don’t have any crazy chemicals in it. That’s it. I personally found it too sweet for my tastebuds. The sugar on the ingredient list (yes, real sugar at least) was too overpowering and that’s really all you can taste. I found the rice odd in texture but that could be because I don’t usually eat cooked rice that’s been sitting in a plastic container on a shelf. I may be biased but the texture of the rice reminded me of a gummy bear. I ate a few bites and sadly, I tossed the rest of it in the garbage. I’m sure it’ll decompose.
Now, I realized that I might have been biased so you’ll be happy to know that I had a friend try the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal to get a second opinion. Let’s call her GP (short for guinea pig). GP never gets a chance to eat lunch. She’s often too busy to eat and half the time is scrounging for something edible before she passes out. So, if nothing else, GP should have a more positive view of the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal since it is better than eating nothing.
Well, GP followed the instructions but like me, also warmed it up on a glass plate. You’ll be happy to know that GP ate the whole thing and found it was exactly what she needed because yet again, she had no lunch and was close to losing consciousness. GP found the rice to be fine as it was but also found the sauce much too sweet. Being a vegetarian, the meatless sauce (it does have veggies in it) worked in her favour. So there, you’ve been 2 different sets of opinions.

Verdict:

Will I buy the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal in the future? NO..a big giant capital NO. I really couldn’t stomach the texture of the rice, the sweetness of the sauce and how far it fell from the teriyaki claim. The fact that the cooked rice just sits there in a plastic container also creeps me out. I had visions of creepy crawly bacteria sitting in the plastic container multiplying happily because honestly, I don’t know how long the stuff has been sitting in a hot delivery truck or on a supermarket shelf. I can’t imagine spending money on this product when I’m sure the cost of one Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce microwaveable meal would probably buy me a whole bag of uncooked rice.
Ask my friend GP and she probably won’t buy it either. It was a good quick fix but it wasn’t memorable or amazing enough to warrant a purchase.
Now, I did really like the orange Uncle Ben’s folks who were spreading the Uncle Ben’s good cheer. Whoever hired them did a phenomenal job of choosing friendly, engaging, and professional people. It was also a great marketing idea, very grassroots, very noticeable and as a result, it’s got a product review on my food and product review blog. It’s just a shame that the product didn’t live up to its potential. On top of it all, the waste that this product generates just doesn’t seem right especially when I can make something better and I’m not even a chef. Sorry folks, had to be honest!
Note: I can tell you one thing – this product is so new that it’s not even out on the Uncle Ben’s website yet! When we got the sample, the orange t-shirt folks told me it would be in the grocery stores ‘next week’ but that was a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why I couldn’t find it on the Uncle Ben’s website (maybe it’s there and I just didn’t see it). So, consider this a heads up on a very new product!

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.

Hello and thank you for your lovely feedback! What can I say, we try our best and hope it’s enough. I write product reviews about different products our family has tried and give an honest review about it. Sadly, the Uncle Ben’s rice and sauce (ugh on the teriyaki) really truly did not measure up. I certainly wouldn’t pay $4 for it! Oh well, to each his own but at least I can give some feedback before people dish out their hard earned money! Hope you visit us again soon! Hello! Does the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce (the teriyaki one) sound tempting? Perhaps for some but sadly, it did not appeal to me. I appreciate that the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce has no preservatives but aside from that, that’s all I can say. Let me know if you try the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce and if so, how did you find the quality and taste? It would be interesting to see! Hope you visit our site again soon! U.B. is really pushing this product on tv. I cook from scratch and almost never buy “instant” foods. I don’t know what this product costs or what the weight of it is, but it is probably waaaay overpriced for what you get. And it doesn’t even taste good? Very poor value in my eyes. Buy a bag of rice and some cans of veggie soup. Cook it all up and put it in the fridge or freezer.

Hi there and thanks for your comment. I absolutely agree with you and although I recognize everyone has different taste buds and preferences, I have to be honest and say that this particular Uncle Ben’s product really did not appeal to me. I mean, who knows. I’ve seen other flavours but I was so put off by the teriyaki sauce Uncle Ben’s product that I can’t even fathom going back to try another one. More importantly, just the thought of that cooked rice sitting on the shelf waiting for me to purchase it seriously creeps me out. I mean, really, how long has it been sitting on the shelf? In our home, we usually cook from scratch as much as possible but this website has certainly led us to try some novel products. The grocery stores I’ve seen sell the Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce for about $3 give or take. For one serving, I’d rather buy a real bag of rice to cook at home. But hey, I recognize everyone has a different family life and different people cook in different ways. If you do buy prepared foods, I would only caution against this one because I really didn’t find it appealing. If you want to try, get it on sale! From the family at thingsthatwedo.com

Hi Ron, thanks so much for your reply! To be honest, I’ve talked to a lot of people but I have yet to come across anyone who actually LIKES the teriyaki Uncle Ben’s Rice and Sauce To Go. I’ve had a few say they’d eat it again but wouldn’t necessarily pay for it at full price. I’ve had quite a few say that it’s just too sweet so the flavours seem off balance and for me personally the idea of microwaving rice, that has been sitting in plastic on a shelf for I don’t know how long, is really scary. I mean, when I cook rice at home, it would go funky and moldy after a few days so how is this product able to stay stable on the shelf beyond a few days? Something for me, just doesn’t add up. Mind you, I have to be honest and say I’ve only ever tried the teriyaki flavour but after being so turned off, I couldn’t imagine trying any of the other flavours unless I got them for free. Having said that, you might like it because we all have different taste buds but I would definitely wait for a significant sale before buying it. After all for $3 (that’s the rough price I’ve seen at the grocery stores), you could get a bagel and cream cheese with change left over. At least you’d know the bagel wasn’t sitting on the shelf for weeks waiting for you. If you do try it, reply back and let me know what you thought. From the family at: http://www.thingsthatwedo.com

How come Uncle Ben’s sauces in the jars are not sold now–I can’t seem to find them anymore–love the sweet and sour sauce!

    1. admin says:

Hi Roxanne, thanks for the comment! Who knows but I think the Uncle Ben’s sauces in the jars would be better because at least then you could control how much sauce you want to use and on what! Sweet and sour sauce is a personal fave of mine too. Sometimes, when I’m in a pinch, I’ll squeeze some lemon juice and mix it with some honey. It’s not the exact match but at least it’s got the same flavour notes! Hope you’ll visit our site again soon. From the family at: http://www.thingsthatwedo.com
