Once upon a time, I had written about how disappointed I was in the Reese Peanut butter cups. I don’t know what changed but something changed in their formulation. The peanut butter cups I had grown up loving no longer tasted the same. The size of the Reese peanut butter cups is now smaller and the balance between peanut butter goodness and decadent sweetness is completely off. I haven’t eaten any Reese peanut butter cups since my review but I still reminisce about them.

Well, if you’ve been looking for a new and improved substitute for your Reese peanut butter cup disappointment, then you HAVE to try President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts. I bought a bag on a recent trip to my neighborhood Loblaw’s and these delicious morsels do not disappoint.

Product Review: President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts

First off, a 340 g bag of President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts costs only $3.49 where I live and while some of you may think it’s pricey, I think this is a great deal because this bag will last forever in my home. More importantly, I read the ingredients and I’m impressed. These President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts are made with: milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, chocolate, soy lecithin, salt, natural vanilla flavour), peanuts, sugar, palm kernel oil, lactose, salt, and soy lecithin. Now, you may still find this to be a long list, a quick comparison to the ingredients in a Reese peanut butter cup and you quickly realize that there is a ton of other stuff in the Reese peanut butter cups.

The Reese peanut butter cups are made with milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa powder, milk ingredients, unsweetened chocolate, lactose, soy lecithin, polyglycerol polyricinoleate), peanuts, sugar, dextrose, salt, tbhg, and citric acid. First thing I notice are those big words that I can’t pronounce. What exactly is that stuff and then, what is tbhq? I don’t remember seeing that on my grocery shelf in the fresh food section. For me, these President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts win in the ingredients category.

Taste test: President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts vs. Reese peanut butter cups

I open the bag and right away, I notice that these President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts remind me of the smaller individually wrapped mini Reese peanut butter cups. I take a bite and I think I’m in a PB dream. This has got to be the yummiest peanut butter cup I’ve had in a very long time. It actually reminds me of how peanut butter cups are SUPPOSED to taste: the President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts have a sweet chocolaty taste but the peanut butter is a smooth peanut butter that really does melt in your mouth. And guess what? The peanut butter tastes like peanut butter. When the President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts is completely gone, there is no weird aftertaste. All I am left with is a lingering peanut butter and chocolate flavour. That’s it.

Now, for those of you who are infrequent peanut butter cup eaters, you may have no idea what I’m talking about. But, I have to be honest and tell you all that I was highly disappointed when I took a bite of a Reese peanut butter cup many months ago. In fact, it was a disaster. The Reese peanut butter cup left an odd aftertaste that tasted artificial and had none of that peanut buttery goodness that a peanut butter cup should have. Whatever they’ve done with the formulation, it’s wrong and it’s no longer the Reese peanut butter cup that I grew up with.

Now, to be fair, I purposely bought this new pack of Reese peanut butter cups because it is possible that my taste buds have changed. Well, it was a waste of my money but it did confirm that in fact the Reese peanut butter cups just don’t cut it anymore. When you smell them alone, the Reese peanut butter cups smell like peanut butter cups. However, stick your nose into the PC bag and you quickly realize the peanut buttery goodness is lacking with the Reese peanut butter cups. When I bit into it, the Reese peanut butter cups tasted sweet with a slight hint of peanut butter and that odd after taste was still there. Hm..I wonder if all those big words that I can’t pronounce in the ingredient list have anything to do with it?

When I compare the taste of the President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts vs. the Reese peanut butter cups, the PC ones win by a landslide. There is no comparison. The President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts taste like peanut butter cups. The Reese ones don’t. And, I’m not just being biased. I even asked colleagues and my husband to test both products out and all of them agreed that the President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts have a better flavour profile.

Now, I did have one colleague make a very important observation which I’ll share with you. She did notice that since these President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts are supposed to melt in your mouth, they do exactly that. The Reese peanut butter cups don’t and almost seem to have a grittier texture. So, if you’re a texture type of person, you may prefer one or the other. Again, in terms of flavour though, everyone I had to do the taste test agreed that the President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts win hands down.

Verdict: Who wins? President’s Choice or Reese?

I don’t know what’s happened but the Reese peanut butter cups I grew up with and loved to eat are now extinct because what is now sold in those same packages do not taste like my childhood favourites. Whatever was done to the Reese peanut butter formulation, it’s been for the worst because it just doesn’t taste good anymore.

In today’s time, if you want a good peanut butter chocolaty treat, you have to turn to President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts. For me, this is the perfect chocolate and peanut butter balance and I was hoping this would be the case since I fell in love with their peanut butter ice cream last year. I mean, if President’s Choice can perfect a peanut butter ice cream, the peanut butter cup seemed to be the next logical step!

So, if you see these President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Melts, do yourself a favour and just try them. Treat yourself and let your peanut buttery senses go wild!
