A little while ago, ThingsThatWeDo.com did a product review on the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze almond milk drink. At that time, I decided I’d do a few more tests on other brands of almond milk. After all, how can you really tell if something is good unless you check out the competiton? Enter Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage. I picked up the original flavour of the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage because I’m not a big fan of flavoured drinks in general. Let’s see how this Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage measures up.
Product Review: What’s in the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage?
Here are the ingredients in the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage in the original flavour: filtered water, organic cane sugar, almonds, inulin (chicory root fibre), tricalcium phosphate, canola oil, sea salt, gellan gum, sunflower lecithin, carrageenan, natural flavour, zinc oxide, riboflavin, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, vitamin B12.
So, what are my thoughts about the ingredient list for the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage in the original flavour? Well, I’ll be honest, I’m not a big fan of canola oil in general and don’t see the need for it in my almond milk. Not sure why canola oil is part of the ingredient list for the original Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage but I’m sure they’ll tell me it’s because it adds a certain nutritional component to the almond milk which I’d respond and say I don’t need it.
As for the rest of the ingredients in the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage, I’m okay with them except I’m not sure I need sea salt in my almond milk although the Blue Diamond brand used it too (not saying I like it in either!). The good news is, the original Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage has only 1% fat, prebiotics, there’s no cholesterol, it’s lactose and gluten free, it has no saturated or trans fats and it’s rich in Calcium & Vitamins D, B2 & B12.
Taste Test: How does the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage taste?
I like my almond milk cold so I tasted it after it was in the fridge for a day. After tasting the original Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage in the original flavour, I can say it’s yummy and smooth! It’s got a well balance of flavours. I can’t taste the addition of the canola oil or the sea salt. There’s a well balanced almond flavour and the silkiness of it reminds me of a cross between 2% and 1% milk. The original Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage leaves me feeling satisfied and yummy despite my inhibitions about the whole canola oil thing.
A quick comparison between Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze
There are some slight differences between the original Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage and you see the ingredient list is a bit different from the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze drink.
In case you’re wondering, here’s the ingredient list for the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk that I reviewed back on December 7, 2012. The Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk is made with filtered water, evaporated cane juice, almonds, calcium carbonate, sea salt, potassium citrate, carrageenan, and sunflower lecithin.
A quick comparison shows that both the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk and the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour have filtered water and a cane product as the first two ingredients. Almonds also happen to be the third ingredient for both almond milk beverages. Neither one uses organic almonds. Both also use sea salt, carrageenan, and sunflower lecithin but most likely in varying amounts given that they fall in different places on the ingredient list order. That’s my guess anyway.
Both also have different nutritional benefits. The image on the right shows the nutritional benefits of the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour. In 1 cup (250ml), the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour gives you 10% vitamin A, 30% calcium, 6% iron, 45% vitamin D, 6% vitamin E, 25% riboflavin, 50% vitamin B12, 15% phosphorus, 6% magnesium, and 10% zinc.
The Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk in a 240mL serving gives you 10% vitamin A, 45% calcium, 4% iron, 25% vitamin D, 50% vitamin E, 2% phosphorus, and 4% magnesium.
Which is better? Well, both offer the comparable amounts of vitamin A, iron, and magnesium. The Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour offers more vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B 12, phosphorus, and zinc. On the other hand, the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk offers more calcium and vitamin E.
So, which one is better? I guess it depends on what you’re looking for in an almond drink.
Right now, I’m conflicted because I can’t quite figure out which almond drink I’d rather put my money in. Neither one is made with organic ingredients so it’s not like I can use that as an immediate deciding factor. Both the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Original almond milk and the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour offer different nutritional boosts. Both also happen to taste pretty good. Both are smooth and go down well with my breakfast. My only issue is the canola oil in the Natur-a Enriched Almond Beverage original flavour but that’s just me.
Perhaps, what I’m most surprised by is how different the ingredient lists are for both almond milk beverages so that has been a real eye opener. It shows me that I can’t just assume that all almond milk beverages are created equal. I guess, it will all boil down to cost. My suggestion: try both when on sale and decide for yourself. If you can’t pick one or the other, go with whichever one is on sale!
