TIME FOR SOME HOLIDAY HOMEWORK!

1. What does ‘natural’ mean to you?

If you live in the United States, now is the time to give your input on the term ‘natural’ and how it relates to how your food is labelled. Any informed consumer will have read, at one point or another, the word ‘natural’ on an ingredient label. I’ve always wondered what it referred to and how natural could ‘natural’ be? After all, if it was that ‘natural’, you would have just listed it directly on the ingredient list, right? Well, if you haven’t yet done so, now’s the time to leave your input. The FDA has extended your opportunity to comment on this very term until May 10, 2016.

Find more details on the FDA’s Constituent Updates page by clicking on the link below:

http://www.fda.gov/Food/NewsEvents/ConstituentUpdates/default.htm?source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

2. Do you know about hand held laser pointers?

Laser pointers…lasers…I know those. Some toys have them but I’ve also seen the actual hand held laser pointers like the ones profs used to use when I was studying in university. Question is: are you aware of the potential dangers behind those very same hand held laser pointers?

Best to read up about them now given that many children (and adults) have just received loads of gifts and treats!

From the FDA: Risk of Eye and Skin Injuries from Hand-held Laser Pointers: FDA Safety Communication

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmasMerry Christmas, everyone!

Well, here we are. Christmas has arrived and my big kid is over the moon. Ask her what she really wants for Christmas and she’ll tell you that she just wants more family time and I couldn’t agree with her more.

Life moves much too quickly for anyone to enjoy it so the holiday season (whatever it is for you) is always greatly appreciated.

This year, I ventured to make thumbprint cookies. Correction: I ventured to master thumbprint cookies. Initially, all the recipes I read sounded simple enough and seemed to follow regular baking conventions: make a wet mix, make a dry mix, combine to make cookie dough. Well, the more research I did, the more complex it became.

Some recipes wanted me to bake the cookies for a while, then take them out, then add the jam and put them back in the oven for a final bake. Others wanted me to bake them completely and only add the jam at the end. So, I went with what I thought was the simplest recipe.

Turns out, it wasn’t as simple as I thought.

A few days ago, I posted this pic of my first batch of thumbprint cookies. Here it is again, in case you missed it.

Yep, they look like a bird pooped jam on my cookies, not very attractive but very yummy. My family ate the entire batch quite happily. So, if you’re interested in making a batch of thumbprint cookies that may look terrible but taste great (or if you just want to read about my saga and have a good laugh), read on! - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmas

I’ve made a decision that I’ve never made before. In light of the busy holiday season and how tired I am, I thought it best to take a little breather and only post weekly unless spontaneous inspiration hits and I go dashing to the keyboard. This way, I can take a much needed holiday break and you can all enjoy the holiday season with intermittent sprinkles of ThingsThatWeDo.com.

For today’s post, I’ve got to do a bunch of recalls because those truly cannot wait for very long!

1. In Canada – BESTAR inc. recalls juvenile dressers
Reason for recall: entrapment hazard because the dressers can tip over if they aren’t securely anchored using the provided parts. Click here for more details.

2. In Canada – Expanded Recall: The Michaels Companies, Inc. recalls various CELEBRATE ITTM brand Lights Sets
Reason for recall: Fire hazard. It’s an expanded recall with over 50,000 units sold in Canada. Click here for more details.

3. In Canada – Expanded Recall: All seasonal lights made by Taizhou Hongpeng Colour Lanterns Co., Ltd. or Ningbo EGO International Co. Ltd. recalled by various Canadian importers
Reason for recall: fire hazard. This expanded recall really highlights the extent of the recall with over 1 million units distributed across various stores. WOW. Click here for more details

4. In Canada: Sears Canada Inc. recalls WholeHome Noel 70 L.E.D. Lights
Reason for recall: electrical hazard. Click here for more details

5. In Canada and the U.S.: Focus Bicycles recalls Izalco Max Bicycles
Reason for recall: fall hazard. This is not your typical bike fall, we’re talking bike parts! Click here for more details

6. In Canada: Mountain Equipment Co-op recalls Ghost Bicycles with Front Wheel Quick-Releases and Disc Brakes
Reason for recall: fall hazard. Yep, another one. Click here for more details

7. In Canada and the U.S.: Skip Hop Recalls Moonlight & Melodies Projection Crib Mobiles
Reason for recall: injury hazard because the piece holding the mobile on to the crib can break and if it does break and the mobile lands on the child in the crib…well, you get the idea. http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2015/55996r-eng.php

8. In Canada: Simba Toys North America recalls Cotoons® Keys Rattle manufactured by Smoby
Reason for recall: choking hazard. Click here for more details.

Okay, that’s it for now! Enjoy the holiday busy schedule, embrace every moment and we’ll chat soon! Who knows, I might pop in before Christmas. Knowing me, I won’t be able to stay away for too long. :)

With Christmas right around the corner life is certainly moving along at full speed! There is still so much to do and I’m a relatively low key person. As you can see I’m incredibly late for today’s post but better late than never. I fell asleep early, completely zonked from a hard week of work, work, and more work paired with far too many batches of holiday cookies (some turned out great, some were okay, and some well, got burnt…). I come back online today and did a little internet digging and realized that Pentatonix has come out with a new video for the holiday season.

How awesome is that?

Take a moment to watch this new Pentatonix video, The First Noel. I’m sure glad I did!

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmas 2014 picNope, I won’t say it, but you know it is. December is a beautiful time with many different holiday celebrations. It’s a time for families and friends to get together. There are parties and potlucks, coffees and teas, and food food and more food.

That’s not all!

With the holidays in full swing, many of us are also busily decorating our homes or running around frantically trying to find ‘just the right gift’ for that special someone. Thus, it should come as no surprise that a Consumer Product Update on holiday safety has been released. It makes perfect sense. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, it’s good to have reminders like these to keep us safe and on track especially this year. There seems to be so many product recalls issued for seasonal lights that I didn’t even bother to pick up any new ones this year! Thank goodness for shiny baubles, tinsel, and garland.

thingsthatwedo.com - green beaver wildflower beeswax frosty mint lip balm

Well, that’s quite wordy but hey, I didn’t come up with the name. I picked up these Green Beaver lip balms a while back but didn’t get a chance to try them out until now. They were on sale. I purchased 2 of these Green Beaver lip balms for less than $4. Even though I had so many other lip balms at home, I couldn’t resist and picked them up. I mean, $4 for 2 Green Beaver lip balms?

Talk about an amazing deal!

thingsthatwedo.com - lundberg ketchup rice chips

I haven’t been happy with potato chips for a long long time now. Sure, I like to eat them occasionally but they always seem to be missing something. I can’t quite put my finger on it but potato chips seemed somehow pointless (which is probably a very good thing).

Having said that, it doesn’t mean I’m not interested in trying new crunchy things. While I don’t need to plow through an entire bag of potato chips in one sitting, I don’t mind the occasional crunchy savory snack.

On a recent trip to my local health food store, I decided to pick up this bag of Lundberg ketchup rice chips. I love ketchup, my daughter loves ketchup so I figured this would be a nice treat for the two of us.

Boy, was I right!!! - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - numbers book

Our home is full of books. Our entire family loves books and well, we buy them, we get them as gifts, and we also have a hard time parting with them. The other day, my daughter and I decided to dig through a few boxes of old books to see what we might be willing to donate.

Lo and behold, we stumbled upon this book that she loved when she was younger. This First Concepts book about numbers had all the features that make books fun and engaging for young toddlers. - Continue Reading
