thingsthatwedo.com pic - product recall 2015 pic

Another Monday and another set of recalls. This is starting to become my new Monday routine. Of worthy mention, looks like a lot of seasonal lights continue to be recalled so buyer beware!

1. In the U.S.: FDA Announces Glades Drugs’ Nationwide Voluntary Recall Of Compounded Multivitamins
Reason for recall: High Amounts Of Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) which may result in vitamin D toxicity. Translation: not good. Click here for more details.

2. In Canada: Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix Recall Various Seasonal Light and Mini Light Sets
Reason for recall: well the seasonal lights recalls continue! Are you surprised that this is recall was issued because of the potential fire hazard? Click here for more details.

3. In Canada and the U.S.: Sure Signal Products Recalls Heat-Activated Fire Alarms
Reason for recall: can’t explain all the mechanics but essentially this alarm might not warn you when there’s a fire. Click here for more details

4. In Canada: Nova Scotia Power Recalls Blazer Flashing Reflector Safety Light
Reason for recall: burn hazard but it’s so much more than that. While only released in Nova Scotia, I thought this was a worthy notice for all of us to remember. As it turns out, the small batteries can easily be removed. That’s bad enough until you consider who might remove those batteries (i.e. kids!) and what might happen if those batteries were ingested. So, you can see why I posted this! Click here for more details

5. In Canada: Updated Food Recall Warning – Inverloch Cheeses
Reason for recall: listeria Click here for more details

6. In Canada: Expanded Recall: Loblaw Companies Ltd recalls various Life at Home® brand seasonal lights
Reason for recall: fire hazard. You see, it’s ongoing. Click here for more details

7 and 8. In Canada: The Michaels Companies, Inc. recalls CELEBRATE IT Christmas Basic Lights 100 Clear Indoor/Outdoor Light Set and The Michaels Companies, Inc. recalls CELEBRATE IT Bright Tidings 50 LED Indoor/Outdoor Light Set
Reason for recall: I think it’s because of a fire hazard but I can’t be sure since the links won’t open up for me. So, take a moment to check out these links if you think you might own these products http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2015/55996r-eng.php

thingsthatwedo.com - homemade honey granola bars

A big thanks to my daughter for posting for me yesterday. I guess I should probably apologize now. Those of you who are regular readers of ThingsThatWeDo.com know I generally like to post at night so that all will be fine and dandy for the next morning. However, I just haven’t been able to maintain that momentum lately. I’ve been doing a lot of late night baking in preparation for an upcoming cookie exchange which has left very little time for typing. Once I get those pics up and running, I’ll be sure to post them and the recipe.

Trust me, it’s a good one.

Since that isn’t ready yet, I thought I’d post a recipe for some honey granola bars that I decided to make a few weeks ago. They’re a great snack for school and they’re so incredibly easy to make.

thingsthatwedo.com - plus plus

Hi, I’m back. Can you guess who I am? Am I Joe? Am I Bob? No! I’m Jenny!! I’m posting about a cool toy called Plus-Plus. They are these interlocking blocks that are the same shape but can make so many different things.

thingsthatwedo.com - plus plus

You can make 3D objects or 2D objects and you can put them together to make things like this cool person like I did.

thingsthatwedo.com - plus plus

When you make 3D things, you just build upwards and they’ll all eventually connect to make something 3D. I’ve made so many structures like a basketball net so I can shoot little balls of paper towel through it, a pirate ship, and even a heart to give to my mom for Mother’s Day. I’ve made a flower garden that just barely stands up.

thingsthatwedo.com - plus plus

I’ve also made an emoji that looks like a blockhead and I’m going to make a Minecraft guy one day.

I like these Plus-Plus blocks because you can make so many different objects with them. My mom wanted to make a hamburger but she hasn’t figured that out yet. She keeps trying to make it one giant block but I told her she should try making separate pieces to make it easier. She could then stack them together. She likes these blocks because they’re easy to snap together and you can get your shape in a few minutes. It’s not too hard to make 3D objects because you just really have to stack them. I like these because they allow me to be creative. Even though all the pieces are the same size and shape, the objects you make always come out different (unless you want them to be the same).

Well, that’s it for now folkies but be good and come back and read next time. My mom will be posting another day. Hope you’re getting ready for the holidays. My mom had a little tinsel problem. She kind of got tangled while decorating the tree. You’re probably thinking, “you’ve got the tree, already?!” but that’s another story. Anyway, bye for now!

thingsthatwedo.com - burritos

Thank goodness it’s Friday! What better way to enjoy Friday than to have an easy dinner that’s stress free and simple to make. A couple of Fridays ago we decided to make burritos. A little bit of ground beef paired with some salt, pepper, onions, garlic, cumin, and curry powder, mushrooms, and corn and dinner is ready.

Ah…easy and so delicious.

My big kid loves the home made burritos. She gets to scoop all the fillings and roll up her own burrito. We chat, we eat, and it’s just so incredibly easy.

Going to keep this post short because I don’t know about you but I sure could use a bit of R and R!

Mmmm, burritos.

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmas 2014Alright, I’m tired.

I could probably end the post right there! Short and sweet and probably quite reflective of how most of us feel this time of the year. I’m emotionally exhausted, physically exhausted, and I’m pretty sure my brain is tired too. In the blink of an eye December is almost here. Christmas decorations are all abound and my favourite: Christmas music! (psst, if you didn’t pick up the Pentatonix Christmas CD last year, you definitely need to pick it up NOW)

One of the things I look forward to this time of the year is a cookie exchange party that I go to. It’s quite the fun and yummy event and it certainly motivates me to bake. I’ve discovered that my cookies turn out much better if I maintain some sort of baking routine. The minute I stop baking for a few weeks, the quality of my baked goods goes right down the drain! I don’t know what I’ll be making this year but I’ll likely test out different cookie recipes this weekend.

As for today, I’m just going to make sure I stay focused, stay positive, and trudge along until we get to Friday.

Short and sweet post today because, well, that’s all I’ve really got! Have a great day everyone and remember: even if it’s hard to find, look for that silver lining.

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmas erasers

You see, it doesn’t matter what the season it is, erasers are always a joy to have around! My daughter got these Christmas themed erasers a while ago and they are so adorable. I found a pack of four erasers, two snowmen and two Santa Clauses. Long and wobbly, they do resemble licorice so young kids and parents, beware! They are not candy. They just look like candy especially when they haven’t been used yet!

thingsthatwedo.com pic - christmas erasers

These Christmas erasers happen to be perfectly adequate and effective at ridding the world of pencil oops.

Growing up, I always loved stationary of all sorts but erasers were definitely on my top 10 list of cool ‘must haves’. They came in so many different shapes and styles I just couldn’t resist collecting them! Now that my big kid is in school and busily involved in all sorts of homework, she too has her own collection of stationary goodies. Some erasers are strictly for display and appreciation while others like these Christmas erasers are also in full academic use. Her one stipulation: to use only one side of the Christmas erasers so she can still see Santa and the snowman on the ‘good side’.

I mean really, what’s not to love about erasers?

thingsthatwedo.com - pacifica natural minerals mysterical supernatural eye shadow palette

For the longest time, I’ve been trying to go more natural with my makeup. Given that I’m prone to looking like a raccoon, it’s somewhat inevitable that I wear makeup to go to work lest I scare my colleagues senseless. My makeup used to come from a wide variety of brands usually based on price and colour. As I get older, I realized I wanted something more out of the makeup I put on my face. I wanted more natural products with ingredients that didn’t feed into my paranoid thinking.

I recently went to my local health food store and found Pacifica Natural Minerals Mystical Supernatural Eye Shadow Palette on sale for less than $15. It was a decent price especially when you consider that many big box store brands have similar prices.

Let’s just say it was my lucky day!
