thingsthatwedo.com - halloween 2013

Wow, talk about cutting it close. If you’ve had a chance to scroll down, you’ll see I did an update post for October 30 because I felt the need to confess about my tardy ways.

I am so glad it’s October 31 and the Halloween costume is DONE. The outfit is done, the bag is done, and the hat is done. PHEW.

Are we ready for Halloween? Well, I guess so. I mean, we have the evening planned out and I’ve done 2 loads of laundry so that’s fantastic. I’m at the point where I don’t even know what being ready means! I prefer to think of it as, “we’re just going to go with the flow”.

If it starts to rain, we’ll have an umbrella handy. It’ll be dark so we’ve got the glow sticks and the reflective bands. Her costume is designed to fit over her coat so she’ll be plenty warm. If her plans to go with friends don’t pan out, then we’ll just go all together – no biggies. Dinner will be take out to minimize the chaos of cooking and cleaning but it’ll be good take out with rice and chicken – plenty of protein to keep the energy level up for all the hurrah.

So, I guess we’re ready for Halloween (and all the goodies although we never eat it all. Most of it ends up going to my workplace anyway)!

The one thing I need to do however is GET READY for NEXT Halloween. I do NOT want to be making the costume the day before!

I don’t even know if the system will let me back track but I’m going to try just so I can officially say “I missed posting on October 30″. I knew it, I did it, and I let it happen.

Why?

Oh, well, chalk it up to last minute costume making courtesy of yee old Halloween festivity. Busy as life has been I was up until the wee hours crafting out the Halloween costume (which is awesome but shall remain nameless since I’m all about ambiguity at times like this). It was done by Friday morning, ready for school, but I also spent a portion of Friday night doing work on the hat and the bag.

Typing this post on Saturday afternoon, everything is done and I’m even on my second load of laundry. I have to say though, I cut it close this Halloween! Will need to better plan our time to factor in the time for costume making and unplanned sickies and work load!

At least it’s done and it looks great!

thingsthatwedo.com - christie tomato and sweet basil triscuit made with brown rice

Honestly, I didn’t even know how to put that all together. I know they’re Triscuits made with brown rice and I know they’re from Christie. There were a million different flavours and I settled on the one with the tomato and sweet basil. I love tomatoes and I love basil so this seemed like a great cracker to snack on. It was on sale and I wanted something with a crunch that didn’t come in the form of a potato chip.

Let’s just say these Christie Triscuit crackers are not for the meek. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - nature fall

Well, what do you know, the weather has changed and dipped and the autumn season has officially landed.

Sigh.

There is so much I love about Fall but there’s also so much that bugs me. I love the bright sunny rays that beam through the leaves with the autumn coats. Like dancing rainbows, those colourful autumn leaves are absolutely stunning. My daughter used to love swishing through piles of leaves as she walked along the sidewalk. She may be a big kid now but that love is as strong as ever. Halloween, warm apple cider, apple pies, butternut squash, I mean, I could go on and on.

Of course, with the changing weather, it also means germs ever linger in the air. Everywhere I go, people are coughing and sneezing and our family hasn’t been exempt from that either. I think we’ve all had our fair share of the sniffles and winter hasn’t even arrived yet.

Things to do: eat well, sleep well, exercise, keep stress to a minimum, and stay healthy.

Yep.

thingsthatwedo.com - nectarine upside down cake

Back in December 2014, I posted a recipe for an apple upside down cake. It’s now October 2015 and I’ve finally gotten around to making it again except this time, I decided to use a batch of nectarines that I had hibernating in the fridge. They weren’t very tasty (they were a little on the frothy fluffy side vs. juicy and moist) so I decided to try and get rid of them by making a nectarine upside down cake.

I’ll be honest. I was a little nervous. It had been a long time since I’d made the upside down cake and I only hoped that I wouldn’t mess it up. You’ll be happy to know that it all worked out just fine. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - philips slimstyle LED lightbulb

Have you seen the Philips Slimstyle LED light bulb? I noticed it one day while I was at my local Home Depot. Intrigued by its slim flat design, I decided to purchase one to see how well it would work in our home. I love LED light bulbs since they consume much less energy than the typical bulb. It may have a little different but it does seem to work. - Continue Reading
