thingsthatwedo.com pic - product recall 2015 pic

Well, well. It’s a Tuesday. Let’s see what kind of recalls we have going on here….

1. In Canada and the U.S.: Fujitsu Canada, Inc. Recalls Battery Packs for Fujitsu Personal Computers
Reason for recall: fire hazard. It’s recalls like these that make me paranoid. Click here for more details.

2. In Canada and the U.S.: Rainbow Play Systems recalls Plastic Yellow Trapeze Rings
Reason for recall: fall hazard and no, it’s not because of a typical fall because they’re trapeze rings. As it turns out, the identified trapeze rings can break or crack and THAT’S how the fall could take place. With over 6,000 units sold in Canada and over 120,000 sold in the U.S., it’s no laughing matter. Click here for more details

3. In Canada and the U.S.: Bed Bath & Beyond recalls Z-Shaped Hooks of Destination Summer Bronze Finish Hammock Stand
Reason for recall: there are Z shaped hooks that keep the hammock in place. Sadly, they can bend or break which means you could end up on the floor instead of being in the hammock. Click here for more details.

4. In Canada: Cequent Performance Products, Inc. Recalls Reese Explore Bike Carrier
Reason for recall: how do I put it nicely? These bike carriers are supposed to hold a bike in place (I’m guessing on a vehicle of some sort). Well, these are being recalled because it can malfunction which is very dangerous if the bike comes off the carrier on the roadway. YIKES. Click here for more details.

Pentatonix.

I could end my post right there. I mean, what else do I need to say? At this point in time, you need to KNOW Pentatonix because if you don’t, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. As if on cue, Pentatonix has yet another new video out. This time it’s for a song called “Where Are U Now” which I’m guessing is a song by Justin Bieber? I say ‘I guess’ because I honestly didn’t even know this song existed until Pentatonix sang it.

After watching the Pentatonix version of Where Are U Now, I did a quick search to hear the original song. Let’s just say Pentatonix rocks and I’ll leave it at that.

p.s. in case you missed it the first time, you need to watch their original song “Can’t Sleep Love”.

thingsthatwedo.com - relaxus eco dehumidifying eggI’ve waited a long time to do this product review. I’ve had the Relaxus Eco Dehumidifying Egg since August 2014 and it’s been in our room ever since. After an entire year I’m still on the fence and haven’t decided if it was a good buy or not. I purchased the Relaxus Eco Dehumidifying Egg from my local health food store as a natural method to remove moisture.

Well, one year later….

thingsthatwedo.com - npw neon puffy paints

Fabric paint. I remember using it when I was younger and I had so much fun! I had to go on a trip and decided to decorate my back pack with fabric paint. That way, my bag would be unique and wouldn’t get mixed with anyone else that might have a similar looking bag. Yep, I made sure of that.

Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve used fabric paint. I jumped for joy during a trip to a local art store when I stumbled across this pack of NPW Neon Puffy Paints. I showed it to my big kid and we both decided it would make for a fun art project. She loves all those bright neon colours and quite frankly so do I!

Months later and here we are with that pack of NPW Neon Puffy Paints. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - kid superheroWell, I’m definitely feeling better (I think) and while I’m going to stay cautiously optimistic I do feel like I’m on the mend. The pinched nerve isn’t quite bothering me as much as it did a while back and my Achilles is getting some much needed TLC.

My massage therapist is incredibly brilliant and has been such a huge support. Thanks to her, I’ve discovered K tape aka kinesiology tape. Given that I don’t see myself as an athlete I never even considered using it until she mentioned that it would help with my Achilles heel. Boy, was she right. Armed with the K tape and a few important exercises and stretches my mobility is returning.

As an extra precaution I continue to write shorter, more succinct posts. I’m still determined to write daily to keep my brain actively engaged in something I like to do. With a few other extra supports (a new keyboard for example for that pinched nerve) and a lot more self care, I do believe I’m on the mend.

Today’s post is a big thank you to the family for being so incredibly wonderful and supportive. After all, that’s really what life is all about!

thingsthatwedo.com pic - violet sept 2015

I may not have a green thumb but there is something to be said for dedication and a kind heart. A long while back, I adopted a number of African violets that seemed to be in serious need of TLC. I honestly didn’t know how long I’d be able to keep them alive for given my lack of greenthumbness (I’m quite aware it’s not a word but it fits).

Lo and behold, years later, all of those African violets are still alive despite a few hiccps along the way. One colleague walked in to my office and found one of the African violets on the floor. It had grown very lopsided (no matter which way I rotated it, it always seemed to grow in the wrong direction) and gravity had taken its toll. The plant was completely detached from its roots.

I had no idea what to do but decided to shove it right back into its pot and gave it a healthy helping of water. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was hoping it would grow new roots somehow. As time passed, the plant didn’t wilt and in fact seemed happier than ever. To this day, that same plant is alive and well.

All the original flowers died off, but every now and again one of the plants would bloom. It’s been a long time but just recently, this was my gift from those African violets: flowers!!

How totally cool is that?

I know, to many, this may seem trivial but for me, this is such a miraculous experience because quite honestly, I don’t do anything for these plants except offer them water and a healthy dose of carbon dioxide. I don’t fertilize them and many are still in their original pots.

When I look at these African violets one word comes to mind: resilience.

thingsthatwedo.com - gingerbread cake

A while back I posted a recipe for spice bars. My big kid loved those spice bars but of course, I can never leave well enough alone so inspired by different recipes, I came up with this gingerbread cake recipe that she seems to like a lot more. According to her, it’s like the spice bars but ‘they’re lighter and fluffier than the spice bars’.

Try out this gingerbread cake recipe and let me know what you think! - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - elmers school glue

With the start of the new school year, I’m sure many families were out and about shopping for much needed stationary supplies amongst other things. We didn’t need to do much shopping given that I’m such a stationary hog. Gosh, I LOVE all that stuff. I can’t even tell you how many new packages of neat pens I have at home that have yet to see the light of day.

Of course, I couldn’t resist at least one trip to the store just to see if there might be something we should pick up and my child came home with this bottle of Elmer’s school glue.

Now, today’s post is not about the glue itself. Instead, it’s a hidden math lesson. - Continue Reading
