thingsthatwedo.com pic - kids august 2015

Well, that’s certainly a surprise. I must sound like a broken CD stuck on repeat. Either that or I have no concept of time whatsoever. It seems like school ended just the other day and suddenly, it’s the end of August and children everywhere are getting ready to go back to school.

Actually, that’s not true. Some children are likely excited to go back to school. Some are trying desperately to savour the remaining days of the summer holidays while others are in complete denial that school is around the corner.

Truth be told, I’ve never been fond of September. I may be an adult now but I still get those ‘OMG’ type dreams every year before September rolls in. Sometimes I’m stuck on a never-ending escalator and can’t get off while everything that I want to and need to do float by out of reach. Other times I’m at my locker trying to find my next class only to arrive late or unprepared for a test.

*shudders*

And yet, I was such a good kid!

Well, what can I say?

thingsthatwedo.com pic - nature 2015

Luckily, I’ve embraced my own childhood experiences and have tried to make the whole transition back to school a little smoother for my own child. She’s had plenty of time to relax and play during the summer but we also tried to keep a general routine of events that included some homework time. Thankfully, she’s always loved homework books so she’ll independently work on a few pages every day in between other activities.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to have fun (mind you, it’s not like the fun stops once September rolls in!) and enjoy time together as a family. We still have a few more things to do:

  • *Trip to the dentist for a checkup
  • *Trip to the optometrist for a checkup
  • *Getting a much needed haircut
  • *Trip to the doctor for a checkup

Yes, fun times….

p.s. if you haven’t arranged any of those appointments yet, be sure to get in them in before school starts!

thingsthatwedo.com - neal brothers foods extremely tasty organic tortillasWhen you get the munchies and you want a snack, it’s nice to have something in the home that you can eat without feeling excessively guilty about. Popcorn, chips, rice crackers, crackers…I mean, what is one to choose?!

Enter Neal Brothers Extremely Tasty Organic Tortillas, a super duper yummy tortilla chip that makes snacking a delight! I discovered them recently at my local health food store. The Neal Brothers Extremely Tasty Organic Tortillas were on sale which prompted me to pick them up for a product review.

When my big kid first saw the bag, she immediately said, “BLUE? The chips are BLUE?” to which I replied, “Yep!” Her response, “Cooooool!” She was definitely in for a surprise because not only did I buy the tortilla chips but I also bought some mild salsa as well.

Correction: I think the entire family is in for a treat!

thingsthatwedo.com - big bad detective agency book

During a recent trip to the bookstore, my big kid picked up this book by Bruce Hale titled, Big Bad Detective Agency. It is an incredibly witty and cheeky, featuring classic fairy tale characters that are nothing like the ones I grew up with.

In this book, you learn of a kingdom called Fairylandia and no, it’s really not like any other place you’ve heard of before. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - angry bird lego

I think it’s safe to say almost every home with a child has Lego in it. I have a love-hate relationship with Lego. On the one hand, I love the creativity Lego can foster in children when they’re encouraged to build to their hearts content without following any pre-determined instructions. While I’m not a big fan of those instruction booklets, I can also see their worth and how they can also nurture a child’s ability to follow two-dimensional instructions to create a three-dimensional representation.

Well, on this particular day, I am reminded once again of how much I love Lego.

I go in to my child’s room and this is what I’m presented with. Any guesses what it is?
It’s her version of Angry Birds! Cool, huh?? If you look closely enough you can see in this pic the slingshot and the red bird perched on top. You can also see the other Angry birds (the black one, yellow one, and the green one that boomerangs when you toss it) resting on the bottom waiting for their turn in the sling shot. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - pc waffle bowlsYep, it’s August. The sun is still out and it’s still summer which means ice cream is still a hit in our home. Sometimes, we scoop ice cream into cups, sometimes we plop it into bowls, and sometimes, sometimes, we get to eat ice cream with these super awesome PC Waffle Bowls.

These PC Waffle Bowls are an amazing addition to almost any ice cream (at least in my humble opinion) and my entire family loves them. I mean, really, what’s not to love about a waffle bowl made to be ice cream’s best friend?? - Continue Reading

You know I love Pentatonix. How could you not know that I love Pentatonix?! Every so often you’ll hear me rave about them and how fantastically talented they are. A 5-person strong acapella group, they make every single song sound simply perfect. They cover songs but they also have their own original songs.

Golly, I could go on and on but that’s not what I’m posting about today.

NOOOOO, today I’m posting about a new video that they just released on August 21, 2015: Cheerleader (OMI Cover). I like the original Cheerleader song but I love the Pentatonix version SO MUCH MORE. It’s how they arrange, how they harmonize, and how they do it all so seamlessly. They’ve been singing the Cheerleader song during their recent concert tours but to hear them sing Cheerleader crisply in this official video…sigh, that’s like perfection for my ears.

At the time of this post, this Pentatonix Cheerleader (OMI Cover) video had already received well over 1.8 million views. Singing is a skill, singing to music performed by instruments is a different skill, but singing and harmonizing with nothing but the sounds created by voices alone, well, that’s on a completely different planet.

Things to do: if you have an extra 4 minutes on your hands, go watch this video! Here is the link to YouTube.

p.s. Thank you Pentatonix for continuing to do what you do so beautifully!
