thingsthatwedo.com - crosby's fancy molasses

You’re probably going to tell me it’s Crosby’s Fancy Molasses, right?

Well, you’re only partly right.

You see Crosby’s Fancy Molasses, I see a container of pure scariness. You see, I’ve always been afraid of baking with molasses. I don’t know what it is about molasses but it just plain ol’ freaks me out. Maybe it’s because molasses seems so different from everything else that I bake with. It’s not butter, I’ve seen that solid and in liquid form and I know what white sugar and brown sugar do, but molasses?

No way.

The truth is, though, my big kid happens to like baked goods that use molasses as one of the ingredients. There are all these gingerbread cookie and spice loaf recipes that I’ve been wanting to try so I finally built up the courage and picked up this box of Crosby’s Fancy Molasses. I’ll tell you about my baking adventures another day. Today’s post is all about the big M. - Continue Reading

thignsthatwedo.com - smartfood creamy dill popcornYou know, I’m a person of very simple means. I don’t need much and I don’t ask for much because quite frankly I like seeing the world from a ‘cup half full’ perspective. So, even the smallest acts of kindness will put a huge grin on my face.

Like when it was my birthday and my pals at work gave me a hummus cake adorned with rice cakes (you had to be there to appreciate it).

Or when they gave me a basketful of edible goodies.

Yep, they sure do know how to make me happy: FOOD.
This bag of Smartfood Creamy Dill Popcorn came as part of the birthday gift so of course I had to open it so we could all try it together! - Continue Reading

thingsthawedo.com - inside out movieThe big kid and I haven’t watched a movie in the theatre in ages. No particular reason, there just hasn’t been time. We’ve watched a few movies at home (which note to self: we still have to review) but going to the theatres just seemed like a chore.

That is, until we saw the Inside Out trailer and decided a trip to the movie theatre was mandatory. Inside Out is a children’s animated movie that’s been in theatres for a few weeks now but boy am I glad we saw it in the theatres. Inside Out is a children’s movie that makes me think, it makes me reflect, and more importantly it reminds me of how important all our emotions are.

I kid you not, I cried 3 times while I watched the movie. There is so much I want to say and I can’t quite figure out how to say it all without completely confusing all of you. So, let me talk for a bit with fair warning that you might read some cryptic spoilers below. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - discovery kids 1000 awesomely gross disgusting facts bookMy child, Jenny, is now 9 years old. She’s always been an avid reader and our home is full of books. Once upon a time, she used to love Barney and Dora and Thomas the Tank Engine. She loved Clifford, Little Critter, and Pinkalicious. She loved Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew and she loved Geronimo Stilton. In recent years, her taste in books has certainly diversified. Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and quiz books have become favourites.

Of course, let’s not forget gross books like this Discovery Kids 1000 Awesomely Gross and Disgusting Facts Book.

Oh yeah…this one was a home run from the minute she saw the front cover. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com - marvis ginger mint toothpaste

A little while ago, NailPolishCanada.com contacted me and asked if I’d do a review on Marvis toothpaste.

Huh? Marvis?

Marvis, who?

Obviously, I had no idea what Marvis toothpaste was so I had to do a little digging. Turns out, Marvis is a particular brand of high end toothpaste with a variety of unique flavours. I agreed to try the Marvis toothpaste because I was honestly intrigued.

A special thanks to the folks at NailPolishCanada.com for giving me this opportunity to test the Marvis toothpastes. - Continue Reading

thingsthatwedo.com pic - nature 2015

Summer is finally here. I know, I know. I’m a few days late. June 21, 2015 was the official first day of summer and well, it sure does seem like the summer weather has arrived.

You know what that means, right? If you haven’t yet found your ‘thank you teacher’ gifts, you’d better hurry up because school is almost done for this academic year. This year, the big kid and I opted for something sentimental (which is standard) and something tasty.

It’s fascinating to see how my daughter’s skills have progressed over the years. Instead of a sentence or two in each thank you card, I now see paragraphs that highlight key memories she’s had during the year. The illustrations are more elaborate and detailed and are tailored to each teacher. There’s no doubt about it, a lot of learning takes place when you give children the freedom, trust, and security to make academic discoveries.

So, here’s to an amazing beginning to the summer season. Of course, what’s summer without a little barbecue action?

In case you need a quick FYI refresher, see a recent reminder from Health Canada on Barbecue Food Safety.

If you’re a regular reader of ThingsThatWeDo.com, you’ll know that I’m a huge Pentatonix fan. If you haven’t heard of them before, then you have some serious musical homework to do.

Pentatonix is the most brilliant acapella group on this planet (okay, I may be biased). A strong group of 5 dazzling minds, Avi, Kirstie, Kevin, Mitch, and Scott prove that instruments aren’t necessary to make beautiful music. They’re smart, they arrange their own music, they make their own music, they’re dedicated and hard working, and they sing LIVE.

Pentatonix is magic personified. I can’t quite put it all into words and I won’t bore you all with the history of the group. Do a quick internet search and you’ll learn more than you can imagine about them. From the Sing Off competition to 2015, Pentatonix continues to amaze me.

All I can say is Pentatonix is sheer perfection and they’ve just released a new video titled, “Evolution of Michael Jackson”. You’ve never seen a compilation of Michael Jackson’s work quite like this before.

Things to do: watch it! It was released just yesterday and it already has over 500,000 views.

Pentatonix “Evolution of Michael Jackson”

Yep, I am a fan.
