Here we go again: Fontaine Sante traditional hummus. Sometimes, you just need to find a good basic dip that will go with everything. That’s where plain ol’ traditional hummus comes along. Now, I’ve already written off Sabra dips because they just don’t gel with my taste buds. So, when I saw the Fontaine Sante traditional hummus I decided I’d give it a try. A while back I tried one of their other dips and wanted to test out a different flavour to see how I’d like it.

Let’s just say the Fontaine Sante traditional hummus did not disappoint!

Well, aren’t we adventurous this year? In addition to the usual fanfare, my daughter and I decided we’d plant some herbs too. Let me introduce you all to rosemary and lemongrass, herbs that are currently gracing our indoor pots with their beauty.

Now, we didn’t exactly follow the instructions for the lemongrass. It did say that we should plant each stalk a fair distance apart but with all the roots tangled together, there was a limit to how much I thought I should yank before I completely destroyed them all. I also planted a few stalks outdoors so we could compare how the lemongrass would grow in two different climates and locations (there’s that science coming into play again!).

Let’s see, what do we have today? Crab meat with listeria, light fixtures that can cause fires, baby food maker with parts that fall off, and baby bathrobes that don’t meet flammability requirements. Oh yes, and a reminder from the FDA about taking care of your liver (this is a must read!).

Recall – United States: Ocean’s Catch minced crab meat Reason for Recall – Listeria. This was distributed nationwide so best to make sure you don’t have any at home! Click here to read more.

Recall – Canada and United States: Hamilton Beach bébé 5-Cup Baby Food Maker Reason for Recall: imagine using the different shredding or slicing discs that come with the machine only to have the stainless steel pin in the food bowl lid to come apart and fall into the food you’re making. Then, factor in that you’re using this machine to make baby food. Translation: CREEPY! Click here to read more.

Reminder from the FDA: Sometimes Drugs and the Liver Don’t Mix This was an eye opener for me. We should all be mindful of the medication we take because they can do some serious damage to our liver. Think of all the hard work your liver does. Well, drugs whether they be prescribed, over-the-counter, or natural, could pose a risk for your liver. There are so many factors to consider.

Case in point: acetaminophen. It’s common and in a ton of different over-the-counter drugs but take too much and it’s one of the most common causse of drug-related liver injury (that’s what it said in the post from the FDA). See what I mean? Click here for more details.

Recall – Canada: Commercial Electric brand basic hanging shop lights Reason for Recall: FIRE HAZARD. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, the lamp sockets from this product may pose a serious fire risk. AND YES, there have been incidents, a LOT of them. With over 111,000 units sold, this is no laughing matter. Click here to read more.

Recall – Canada: Baby Aspen Bath Robes Reason for Recall: does not meet flammability requirements. Click here to read more.

Okay, I struggled with that title for so long that I finally gave up and just left it at that. It was the best thing I could come up with to capture the essence of today’s post.

As a parent, I know I want the best for my kid’s future. What parent wouldn’t? We all try our best to the best of our means but I’ve long since realized that it’s not about how much ‘stuff’ you throw at them. As parents, we love our children wholeheartedly and it’s this kind of positive emotional environment that allows them the space to flourish. Part of that requires us to respect children as capable individuals, to give them the space to learn and problem solve independently and for us to provide guidance or support as needed.

Why am I saying all of this? I do have a point, really.

Sigh, our entire family wears eye glasses. Yes, it’s true.

I started wearing mine in grade 10 and boy did I get headaches when I first started wearing those eye glasses. As luck would have it, one eye is nearsighted, one eye is farsighted. Translation: that’s a lot of work for my brain to do to translate what I see. The hubby has terrible eye sight and just recently, my big kid has had to wear them too.

It should come as no surprise then, that the FDA would provide information on how to protect that two eyes you have or that I’d want to feature this on ThingsThatWeDo.com. As I tell my daughter, we’re only born with 2 so you have to take good care of them. The more we know, the better care we can provide for ourselves and for those we love.

Questions: Is it true that eating carrots is good for your eyes? Is sitting too close to your computer monitor bad for your eyes? What about those over-the-counter eye drops?

If you’re not sure of the answers to those statements and more, you should really read this post from the FDA. Even though I knew some of the information, it was good to refresh my knowledge and keep the info current in my own brain.

Click here to visit the FDA site and learn more about how to better care for your eyes.

Infant sleepers that don’t meet flammability codes, hummus and dips that are contaminated with Listeria, immersion heaters that can shock and hurt you. Well, golly gee whiz. Throw in the cottage cheese and I don’t know where I stand anymore.

Recall – Canada: Babysoy infant sleepers Reason for Recall – product does not meet flammability requirements. While only about 500 units were sold, it’s good to read and learn and know what NOT to buy in the future! Click here to read more.

Recall – Canada: immersion heaters. Do you have one? Reason for Recall: electric hazard. Quite frankly, I don’t get what this product is but an immersion heater is apparently some tool or gadget that you would have bought because you wanted to use it to warm up a liquid of some sort. The only problem is, when you stick it in the liquid, you could get a shock from it. That just sounds creepy. What makes it worse is that the number of units sold is UNKNOWN! Click here to read more.

Recall – United States: Hummus & Dip Products Reason for Recall: LISTERIA. Lansal, Inc. makes a number of different dips which are all being recalled because of possible contamination with Listeria. Click here for more details.

Recall – United States: big Kraft Foods recall for select cottage cheese products from different brands Reason for Recall: may spoil earlier than expected. Note: Kraft Foods Group makes a number of different brands of cottage cheese. This recall involves select products from the following lines: Knudsen Cottage Cheese, Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese, Simply Kraft Cottage Cheese and Daily Chef Cottage Cheese Click here to read more.

Keep your eyes open and you may just be surprised at what you’ll find. There’s a neat little Italian supermarket that our family frequents and they’ve got some really great treats that I can’t seem to find anywhere else. On one particular visit, I spotted this bottle of Italian Volcano organic lemonade and decided I’d surprise my big kid with it. She loves all things lemon at this moment and I figured she’d get quite a kick out of it.

Was I right?
