Well, it’s Halloween! The big day has come for children all over the world who’ve been eagerly anticipating candies and chips galore. This year, like previous years, we’ll be going out for some trick or treating. We don’t go out for long, it’s a weeknight after all, but the fun is in the process – getting dressed, going door to door, meeting friends along the way…

childhood at its best.

This Halloween day, enjoy as children do. I’m not a big fan of all that creepy stuff (sooo not for me) so I’m going to focus on the fun aspects that aren’t as creepy – pumpkins and fresh fall leaves, hot apple cider and warm pumpkin pie. Hanging out with family and friends. Spending time laughing and giggling. Oh, did I forget the chocolate and candies? How could I? Silly me!

Until tomorrow,

Jenna, ThingsThatWeDo.com

It’s Halloween and for many, it’s a time to splurge. Having said that, as a consumer, I have particular hang ups that I just won’t budge on. So, here I am at my local grocery store trying to figure out what I’m going to give out for treats this year. I come across this pack of Quaker chewy mini chocolate chip mini granola bars and they look enticing. I mean, how bad could granola bars be, right?

Right?

WRONG.

I’m enticed enough to pick up the box and then promptly wanted to wonk myself over the head for even considering them. Have a good look at the ingredients that went into these Quaker chewy mini chocolate chip mini granola bars: granola (Quaker rolled oats, rolled whole wheat, brown sugar, barley flakes, sunflower oil, inulin, honey, natural flavour, modified milk ingredients), glucose, chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, salt, vanillin), whole grain brown rice crisps (whole grain brown rice flour, sugar, barley malt, salt, mixed tocopherols), glycerin, shortening (canola oil, modified palm and palm kernel oils), brown sugar, sorbitol, inulin, salt, natural and artificial flavour, soy lecithin, BHT (preservative).

That’s not a long list of ingredients AT ALL. I think my fingers fell off while typing out that list. Sarcasm does not become me when I’m irritated (sorry, folks). So, on top of all that, the Quaker chewy mini chocolate chip mini granola bars then adds BHT directly into the food itself?

THANKS.

I can’t say I always feed my kid the healthiest foods on earth but there’s a limit to how low I’m willing to go even during Halloween. I won’t go into details about BHT but if you do a little bit of your own research. So, on top of the rest of the shortening and junk that is in these Quaker chewy mini chocolate chip mini granola bars they then throw in the BHT as a bonus.

Suddenly, I’m reminded of why I like to either make my own granola bars or buy ones like the Enjoy Life Chocolate Sunbutter Soft Baked Bars for my kid. Sure, I’m not oblivious that better quality costs more but I’d much rather keep my $4 than spend it on the Quaker chewy mini chocolate chip mini granola bars. I’d rather buy stickers and give those out on Halloween than stoop to giving out those nasty bars.

So there in lies my Halloween consumer rant and rave. Some of you might be used to my occasional outbursts but I hope I haven’t caught anyone too off guard. Whether you agree with me or not, my only hope is that we all continue to read those labels and focus on what we want to spend our hard earned money on.

Okay, off to Halloween we go!

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Well, it’s October 28, 2013 and there are 4 days left until Halloween arrives. My kid is eager for Halloween to arrive and her costume is ready to go. I’m impressed that we pulled it off this year considering how busy we’ve been. *pat on family’s back*

Regardless of your thoughts on Halloween (it’s not for everyone and the creepy side of things is just so NOT for us), we can all agree that safety comes first. Take a moment to read this special reminder notice from Health Canada about Halloween safety. There are reminders about making sure your child’s costume is safe, what to watch out for when trick or treating, and really good tips on how to keep your child safe.

If you plan to go out this Halloween, be sure to read this Halloween Safety reminder! Click here for more details.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! One of the biggest reasons my daughter and I decided to make this product review website is because we both like to try new things. Check out what just came in the mail: a box of Enjoy Life baked chewy bars! Woohoo!! I literally only just got this box in the mail and had to let you all know about them.

Four different flavours and they look really promising (I haven’t even tried them yet but my stomach is making some serious noises as I type this post): Cocoa Loco, Mixed Berry, Caramel Apple, and SunButter Crunch. My daughter saw all these boxes and the minute she saw the words “Cocoa Loco”, her eyeballs grew wide and said, “Can I have one NOW?” Sadly, we’ll both have to wait because dinner was around the corner. Me personally, I’m eyeballing the SunButter Crunch.

Like all Enjoy Life products, these baked chewy bars are free of the 8 common allergens. You’ll find no wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish, or shellfish in these little Enjoy Life baked chewy bars.

Sometime in the very near future we’ll be posting a review about these Enjoy Life baked chewy bars. For now, if you’re interested, make note of this code: CHEWY10. Use it on their online store and you’ll get 10% off your first order of Enjoy Life baked chewy bars. Click here to get to their online store.

*SO EXCITED!*

Those of you who regularly read ThingsThatWeDo.com know I’m not exactly a milk drinker. Correction, my body communicates to me in very specific ways when I drink milk. Yogurt, cheese, ice cream are all happy places to be but milk screams with a big capital N-O. Thus, almond drinks have been my go-to source for calcium and other goodies.

Now, I usually venture towards the basic almond drink. I can’t imagine drinking strawberry or chocolate almond drinks and I already know I didn’t like that coconut almond drink that I tested a while back. So, it should come as no surprise to you all that this will be the first time I’m trying out a vanilla flavoured almond drink.

Allow me to introduce you to Almond Dream Enriched Vanilla almond drink. Ask me why I decided to test it out and I’ll be honest and tell you that I bought the Almond Dream Enriched Vanilla almond drink because it was the only one on sale. None of my other regulars were on sale which is the only reason why I decided this would be the week to test it out for ThingsThatWeDo.com.

I don’t have high hopes because I’m just not a big fan of flavoured almond drinks. I can only hope the Almond Dream Enriched Vanilla almond drink is palatable.

I don’t think I’ve ever done this before but given the severity of one of the recalls, I felt the need to post it ASAP. Most importantly, there have been 2 deaths connected to the ingestion of a particular type of hand sanitizer: Bodico Hand Sanitizer that contains methanol. Of course, then the other recalls started piling in and I read about ceiling fan parts that fall on you, lights that are defective and can lead to serious troubles…sorry for posting 2 recall posts back to back, but thought you all should know! See below for more details. I will NOT post about recalls on Saturday – promise!

Health Canada Recall: Bodico Hand Sanitizer – connection with 2 deaths Reason for Recall: METHANOL. This would be I think, the first time I’ve posted a recall where Health Canada is working with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario. YIPES. Doesn’t matter where you live, I think you should read this recall and be aware! Click here for more details.

From the FDA: Take the Cosmetics Quiz I’m not a brain when it comes to cosmetics and all the stuff that happens to make your average bottle of foundation. So, I took the cosmetics quiz and learned a lot of new information. You may just be surprised and what you thought you knew and how wrong you might be! Click here to start the Cosmetics Retail Quiz!

Recall for Canada and the United States: Crate and Barrel recalls Finley Pendant Lights Reason for recall: well, put it this way, when a light is defective and it involves electricity, you know a fire or property damage isn’t far away. This is a joint recall between Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Crate and Barrel. Click here for more details.

Another Recall for Canada and the United States: Tommy Bahama brand “Copa Breeze” ceiling fan Reason for Recall: because no one likes to get hit by a fan even if its the blade flange. Really? Seriously? This is also a joint recall between Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Air Comfort Products, which is a division of Emerson Electric Company. Not good people, not good at all. Click here for more details.

Updated Recall: Reser’s Fine Foods and Market Pantry brands salad products Reason for Recall: Listeria. Folks, I literally just posted this yesterday and already, there’s an update and more products affected! My goodness!!! Click here for more details.
