I believe in moderation when it comes to eating: don’t deprive, just be smart about it. Have a little bit of ice cream but don’t eat the entire tub in one sitting. Long time ago, I used to cook with canola oil when I thought it was a healthier alternative. Well, then I learned more information about canola oil and decided perhaps it was best that I move on to a different type of oil for cooking.  I’m not a scientist but if you want to know more, it would be a good idea to do some research on the topic of canola oil. Since then, I’ve been using grapeseed oil, mainly the Carapelli grape seed oil. Is cooking with Carapelli grape seed oil any different than other types of cooking oils?

If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of the PC Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice cream (if you haven’t read it yet, here it is ) as well as their (PC Blue Menu Raspberry Sherbet ). So, you can imagine that I was quite excited to see these PC Sugar Cones because I figured, these sugar cones might be a decadent addition to our next ice cream dessert. In fact, I was smart and bought them for a recent work potluck. I figured they would be too dangerous to take home but at work, I’d only be able to have one so they’d be a good treat for sharing.  And, I stayed true to my loves: I tested out the PC Sugar Cones with both the PC Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice cream and the PC Blue Menu Raspberry Sherbet and here is what happened.

We’re a family that likes to try different breads. We don’t eat bread 3 meals a day but breakfast usually has a bread of some sort. Recently, I went to my local Loblaws and discovered these PC Mini Ciabatta Burger Pre-Sliced Buns. Now, I know what the Loblaws ads claim – that these PC Mini Ciabatta Burger Pre-Sliced Buns are great for mini burgers and what not. When I saw those little mini ciabatta buns all I thought of was the kid-friendly sizing. They looked like they’d fit perfectly into a child’s hands which means fewer spills and messes at the table. So, I bought a bag and we enjoyed them for lunch.

Getting ready for school. Yes, I admit it. We’re getting ready for school and one thing we do each year is go to the Optometrist to make sure my child’s eyes are functioning at their optimal level.

As a parent, I can only guess that my child’s eyes are fine. My child doesn’t appear to be squinting when she’s trying to read and she certainly doesn’t watch a lot of tv or play a lot of video games. But, she does watch tv and she does play video games on occasion and I have no idea what kind of impact that has and the only one who can reassure my paranoid parent nerves is the optometrist. - Continue Reading

Reading: The Frog and Toad Series

Children’s book review: Why Frog and Toad?

Some of you may recall the Frog and Toad series by author Arnold Lobel from your own childhood but for some reason, they just don’t ring a bell. My daughter recently read a children’s book and in it, one of the characters was reading a Frog and Toad book. That’s all I knew about Frog and Toad until a recent trip to the local library.

On the shelf, in the easy readers section, my child spotted the exact same Frog and Toad book and of course, we just had to borrow it to read it. Here is our book review on the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel.

Snacking on Loacker Quadratini Vanilla Wafers: an alternative to cookies

Well, what can I say? All in moderation includes snacks too but cookies get boring and so do chips. We don’t eat them daily but it’s nice to know there are alternatives when you’re looking for a snack and I was in a snacking mood but had no idea what I wanted.

Thus, when I stumbled on to the Loacker Quadratini vanilla wafers, I thought I’d give them a try. While the ingredient list isn’t great (it wasn’t terrible. I mean at least it didn’t have BHT!), there also wasn’t anything that my child was allergic to so I decided I’d buy it and let her try the Loacker vanilla wafers for a different gustatory experience.

Okay, so it’s more like a couple of weeks but at the rate that these last few days have been moving, I’ll blink and my child will be back at school! The latest topic at home is still the Angelina Ballerina musical. Hey, we just watched it on Saturday and we bought the CD so you can only imagine that it’s still incredibly fresh in her mind (if you haven’t read it yet, read her Angelina Ballerina review here).

She’s excited to go back to school which is fantastic! We’ve kept up with the reading and writing and made frequent trips to the library this summer. Over the summer, we made sure to keep talking about her teachers as well so they wouldn’t fade too far in the background. We’ve also had some fun times with her school friends. So, in theory, transition back to school should be relatively painless.

I hate to sound like a broken record though: but really, where did the summer go?

Let it be known that my child knows very little about Angelina Ballerina. I think we’ve only caught a glimpse of half an episode somewhere and she’s certainly never laid her hands on any Angelina Ballerina books. My child doesn’t take ballet, dance, or anything remotely similar to ballet. We only ended up at the Angelina Ballerina children’s musical for 2 reasons: 1. My child likes musicals and 2. we’ve been to the Pinkalicious children’s musical which is produced by the same theatre company. Thus the logic was, if we liked the Pinkalicious children’s musical and the quality was awesome, then really, how bad could the Angelina Ballerina musical be?
